Question Need Sound System Advice

I want to upgrade the sound system in my Screw.

I know there is a stereo forum but I wanted screw input

I want a good clear sound system that can be payed loud but not super widow shaking-- door & truck rumbling bass......... that is not to say I do not want good bass.

lets face it I am over 40 and not trying to be 20 ( but I do like linkin park and up to date music not drums with brushes )

Speaker suggestions ???

I think I have found the head unit it is an alpine

do i need an amplifer?

is a subwoofer recomended?

approx cost for each thing you reccomend.....please

I have my truck running fine now I want it to sound good too

thanks so much

Mike

mikebike,

I understand completely what you're asking. When I got my screw, I needed something a little bit beyond factory. I can tell you what I got, where I got it and what I paid but I guess it'll boil down to your budget and your individual taste:

Infinity Kappa reference 5x7s front ($75 ebay)
Kenwood 5x7s rear ($50 Circuit City)
Kenwood 10" in sub with custom box ($150 local shop)
Kenwood 5 channel amp on all 4 speakers + amp ($280 Circuit City)

I won't shake your windows, but with the right volume and music you'll hear me coming on a quite summer day.

At the very least you'll need new door speakers and I would recommed a sub and amp set-up. I took mine to a local shop and had them put something together on paper. I went out and found the stuff myself.

Good luck

I have the Orion Cobalt 200w amp and Orion Cobalt 5x7 speakers. The speakers run at 3 ohms, so it gets a little extra boost from the amp. The vocals are incredibly crisp. It's definately loud enough. I would like to add the sub woofer in the future, but that would mean another amp and more $$$$

Mike,
I put the infinity 5x7's in the doors. I also put an 8" bazooka tube under the rear seat and an alpine 5 channel amp under the passenger seat. I kept the factory head unit and cd changer. I was a lot like you (35yrs) and like a lot of alternative music. the system doesn't feel like it's kicking you, and it sounds a hell of a lot better than stock. I kept the factory head unit because I'm going to upgrade later, when in dash dvd players and screens come down in price.

Mike,

I also have a Bazooka RS8 under the rear seat. It has plenty of base, at least my 14 year old thinks so. I also replaced the the factory door speakers with Polk DX7's all the way around using speaker wire adapters from crutchfield to make it painless.

My next step will most likely be an amp for the Polk's but that will not be for a while when I make a head unit change when I have some spare change.

I installed Polk components in the front and polk 5 x 7 in the back with a 4 x 60watt kenwood amp. It is just right with the exception of deep bass, which I have been able to easily live w/o so far. The stock head unit has very good sound just needs a stronger punch and speakers that can take it.

Mike,

I'm working on migrating my stereo from my T-Bird to my truck. I've got 4 Soundstream amps, an Audio Control crossover, and a/d/s subs (10") I'm using. I'm going to go ahead and by new speakers for the doors. I'll only have room for one sub, most likely. I haven't decided on the brand of speakers yet, but I'm kinda leaning towards Boston.

With no trunk, the hard parts is finding somewhere to shove all this stuff!

Oh, I should mention I'm keeping the stock head and 6-disc changer.

Mike, my system upgrade went like this:

swapped factory head unit for a Pioneer DEH 2100 ($149)
this powers all door speakers and provides pre-out to sub amp

swapped two front door speakers for Infinity Ref 610 cs components with the tweeters in the sails ($200)

added a Jensen 2100 XA amp in rear left storage compartment, running in bridged sub mode to subwoofer ($100)

added a 10" subwoofer from Radio Shack- forgot model number, their pro 400 watt model ($40) in sealed box under left rear seat. Box is my own design, my plans are posted in the subwoofer forum somewhere.

I think it sounds good for $500 bucks, my musical tastes run like yours , I'm turning 40 this year!

I just posted on the other thread...I'm 45 but the music is a big part of my life..the 50 minute drive has to do with it....

Just finished a total gut out of the Super duty....2200 w 2 amp 15"sub, 2-8"midbass 6 1/2", tweets in the doors...

Wife has the SCREW--just going moderate on it...Bought a Clarion sub with 8" 2 ohm 100w plastic cabinet that fits on the hump in the middle flush with dash..looks factory..and its right there to hear..toss all the 5x8" and replace with plates and a 4c ADS amp with level conveters to rca...total cost with good rca's around $150...you dont have to spend big bucks for big sound...
will stay with factory 6 disc....have details if you want...

Question Amp with Factory Head Unit

Was this hard to do or very expensive to have someone do this?
I have replaced the speakers with Polk dx7's but I need a little more power. I want to keep the factory head but I want to add an amp. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks LouScrew

Mike,
The bazooka tube sounds pretty good. It gives enough bass for me. It will not go all the way under the rear seat, it sticks out a little, but not enough to hamper any leg room. I'll try to take a pic and send it to you via email.

LouScrew,

I have an amp with the factory headunit. I had the audio store install mine. They had to place some line level converters in the dash behind the head unit. This converts the speaker out from the headunit to an RCA Pre-amp output. The stock headunit does not have this already built in.
