Anyone solve the Tranny Thunk problem?
I have a 2002 5.4 Screw Lariat 4x4 and I tried it today and it thunks. I get up to about 15 and then let off and let it change back down and then give a little gas and "thunk". I don't think I will take it back to Ford Yet want to see what you guys find out.

I had the same thunk problem and took it to the dealer several times. Finally, one of the techs told me he had a TSB for the Rangers that had similar charecteristics. The fix for the Ranger was to replace the drive shaft. They replaced the driveshaft in my SCrew (2001) and I haven't had the problem since.
My 2 cents...

Back to the thunking...
If you all want to experience a bone shattering thunk, go rent that little white thing I had yesterday. Holy cow. I couldn't feel my back after I took off. It was awful and happend right when I took off from a stop EVERY time.
Being a rental, the thunk could be related to anything because, as we know, rentals have a tendency to 'absorb' more abuse than most vehicles on the road. It only had 12K miles on the odometer.
I wonder if this problem is more widespread than we know. Anybody with Ford cars have any thunking to report?
Has anyone really figured out what is thunking? I know it can't be good and is surely causing a/some part(s) to wear abnormally and probably faster.
Just thought I'd bring this back to the top and keep it moving.

I owned a 2001 SuperCrew XLT 4X4 5.4L for two years and there was never a thunk. I drove it under all kinds of conditions and spent allot of time mountain driving and still never a thunk.
I now have a 2003 SuperCrew XLT 5.4L FX4 and it so far no thunk (only 100 miles on it). However, I am keeping an eye on this thread in the event a thunk develops. I have a feeling the SCrews with the thunk are far outnumbered by the ones that don't. Which leads one to ask what is the common thread which leads to this problem. Somewhere out there is an answer.

I was thinking about the thunk today while on my way home. I've concluded that I don't 'thunk' nearly as bad as I once did. I'm pretty positive about this...
I think my thunk is dwindling.
Which brings up the question, what part has worn to the point that the thunk is nearly thunkless.

I made an appointment to talk to a Ford Service Rep in my area for yesterday. I waited until 11am to get them on the phone. They were down at my local Ford shop. They wouldn't even let me come down to take them for a test drive. Do you believe that. They gave me the "this is normal" speech. Well I blasted them and asked them where to go from there. They had no suggestions. So now I am at a loss for what to do. Do I try the Lemon Law? As far as I am concerned I will never buy another Ford product and will bad mouth Ford until the day I die!!!!
I'm feeling left out because I don't have a thunk, at least no yet(8000 miles). Daveman mentioned in an earlier post that he has a problem when starting out the he thinks might be in the limited slip. Since day one I've noticed that when I start out the engine seems to rev more than needed to move the truck. I complained to Ford when they sent me a new owner satisfaction form, but to no avail. Now this is the first truck I've owned with an automatic, so it might be normal slipping. My 4700 lb '66 Thunderbird moves out with less fuss than my S'crew.
Now I wouldn't trade my "slippage" for the THUNK, but we shouldn't have to deal with either of them. Ford needs a few more "better ideas".

Bad back I am sure.....
