Tranny Thunk

My hat is off to you. You have been back to the dealer more than anyone I have seen on this posting. To date I have not seen anyone who has gotten the thunk fixed. I have had it for two years. My dealer's transmission guy told me there was nothing that could be done about it. Hope you have better luck. Please let us all know if you get it fixed.

Mine Went Away....

I had the same thunk problem and took it to the dealer several times. Finally, one of the techs told me he had a TSB for the Rangers that had similar charecteristics. The fix for the Ranger was to replace the drive shaft. They replaced the driveshaft in my SCrew (2001) and I haven't had the problem since.

My 2 cents...

The driveshaft, most likely, isn't the problem...

TroyK actually had his replaced and his still thunks although, I guess it may be a 'truck to truck' thing. Hard to say.

I'm thunking alot less seemingly recently. I've been paying attention to it and honestly, I don't think it's happening as often... hard to say though. I may just be getting used to it.

to follow up on rockpick's post...i'm now on my second driveshaft and the truck still thunks...but it is much less noticeable. local ford shop has decided to call in ford engineering on this one. will prolly meet with whomever they send sometime in the next month or so...wish me luck.

I would guess that if replacing the driveshaft got rid of your thunk, your thunk was probably a u-joint and not the tranny thunk.... just a thought.

uhhh, the thunk is still there, only not as bad as before. but if the past is any indication of the future...the thunk will worsen with time. hopefully this engineer will be able to specify a permanent fix.

my 01 supercrew w/41000 miles lost 2nd,3rd,gear soleniod shorted wiring harness truck shuttered since day one in 2nd gear, finally stranded me on the side of the road ,ended up 2nd,3rd solenoid engine and tranny harness 02 sensor, still slipps and shakes in 2nd gear, all this ,no coverage on repairs the dealer ate the bill when i traded the truck for my 02 f250 SD larait, along with issues stated,on second set of brakes, had the rotors turned twice, power window on driverside failed, and needed ball joints to get a sticked, they did cover these enough is enough

Wow, it's been a while on this topic. Still have not found a single cause though, that's too bad. I've had 2 F150's since joining this forum, both had the thunk. First was a 2000 SCAB, 4x4 XLT, I now own a 2001 SCREW 4x4 XLT. Scab was a 4.6, Screw is a 5.4, both auto's. Screw is a LS, Scab was not. Both did with/without my Superchip. Would they both have the 70 trans in them, or could they have been different?

I have about 13k on this truck, but have not mentioned this to the dealer as a problem just yet-- hoping someone here would make headway on the issue I guess.

thunk

Every time I drive my old man's 97 Z 71 it does the same thing and has been for 170000 miles. There's alot of heavy drivetrain under there and the shafts are at sharp angles. Just FYI

I'll throw my hat in on this thunk thread. It happens in my 99Expi 2wd though. It has the 5.4. One thing I don't think I saw here is when going down the highway at 60mph or so you can give it a little gas, let off, give it a little gas and it thunks and shudders. It also thunks when shifting gears. Usually that happens when you gun it and let off the gas at the same time it shifts into 3rd. *Thunk* I haven't had it happen yet on my wife's 02 SuperCrew yet. IT's a 5.4 also.

Then there's my brother's 01 f350, 7.3L diesel, 4x4 auto. It acts just like my Expi does. It's not as bad when shifting, but I only drove it for 200 miles or so. My Dad has basically the same f350 with a manual tanny and it doesn't thunk or shudder a bit. I'm thinking they should offer that manual tranny in the SC f-150

Well I brought it back to the service department. Someone here posted that they had 3 loose bolts on their cross-member and the thunk went away when they were tightened. Well they actually put an adhesive on the cross-member this time. They got this from a TSB. Don't have the paper work with me so I am not sure of the TSB number. But it didn't work anyway. Still clunking away. Now I am pissed and I am going to start talking to people higher in the Ford food chain.
