Anyone solve the Tranny Thunk problem?
I too had a thunking sound found after a 3 1/2" liftkit on my f150 2wd that driveline was now out of alignment with the rearend. add 3 degree shim and made sure that the rearend was inline with driveline eliminated the all together. I didn't have a digital protractor to check alignment, i use a cheapo dial indictactor which u can pickup at your local auto store. good lucky i hope this info helps

I finally had a chance to take mine to the shop. Long story short the service writer went the normal route first. After that didn't work he tried to blame the wheel and tire combo I am running. Anyway, whoever posted the TSB... thanks! They are going to try that. Without it I'm sure I would have left with me singing the "normal" blues!
Unfortunately the dealer lost their tranny person this week. They told me to come back after the first of the year.
Has anyone had theirs into the shop with this TSB in hand? Did it fix it?

Well this is just what I didn't want to hear about my SCREW!!
I am a proud owner of an 02 SCREW, but my last car was a 99 Mustang. My Mustang had a real bad thunk in the drivetrain, so bad I had it in the shop for 30+ days total. Thier explanation was it was "DRIVETRAIN BACKLASH". They did many "BAINAID" repairs, which included teflon grease on the slip yoke, de-burring the slip yoke, all worked for about 500 miles, then poof it was back again. I tok my mechanics on test drives, I took the service manager on test drives, and even took the Regional Service Technician on test drives! Each one played the "STUPID" role, saying they never heard anything like it. Well after 2 years of battleing with FORD. all the way up to the engineers who designed the car, I filed a lemon law suit against Ford. During the who thing Ford continued to say that my driving habits caused the "CONDITION" as they like to call it!! Anyways they didnot prove thier case and I was able to get out from under my "LEMON" . I am a Ford man through and through, but if the problems persist, don't let them push the blame to your driving or anything else. Stand up for yourself and make them fix it!!!

Never heard a thunk from the trans, but had a grinding noise after having it out on the highway for a couple of hours and 140 miles. Got home and heard the grinding noise in first and sometimes second gear. Dropped it off at the dealer on Sunday to have it checed. He called back Monday and informed me that the trans was bad (4800 miles) and that they would have to order another from the factory--urgh!!! 4800 miles and the trans is shot. Unbelievable.
I too have the tranny thunk. I just keep pounding on it and after 22,000 mile's still holding up fine (KNOCK WOOD) . It is annoying though. For what it's worth-My 89 F-150,93 Ford Bronco, 95 Chevy ,99 Explorer all had a driveline thunk. They all were 4x4's and all had either limited slip or lockind rear diff's. My father's Suburban also has a thunk it's 2x4 with a locking/limited slip rear end. I don't have time to play the dealer service dept. game so I just "giver". I would just be happy for them to fix my rough idle.

Maybe Ford should consider putting the RW100 in instead of the 70. It is a heavy enough truck... Maybe that would add too much cost/cause other problems though??? Don't know, maybe Ford just needs to build better tranys and not get cheap and cut corners. They should seriously try to compete with someone like Alison transimissions (Chevy
)
)
I have the clunk in my supercrew. Dealer applied the fix, a spring was missing that takes up slack while downshifting? It did not fix the thunk, mine is in the downshift, I travel a slow curvy hill and it is very harsh shifting 2 to 1. The fix did not change a thing. Normal driving it is fine, probably why there is not more complaints. Dealer says to live with it!!
Is this fix a known issue in all the SCREW tannys????
Or is this just an occasional thing that gets missed?
Ford needs to build some better tansmissions soon or there going to taint themselves like Dodge did with there transimission problems. Except Dodges problem was they would lose gears, stop working completly etc.

Universal Thunk
I too have the thunk. 3rd-2nd downshift, going slow ususally up a hill but not always. If this is a universall problem that isn't getting fixed, we need to consider making this another radiator-type issue and put some pressure on Ford to come up with a fix.
Hi all,
I know this is not the popular solution, but I just installed a SuperChip from Mike and it seems to have eliminated the thunk for me. I really like the new shift pattern of the chip, it does downshift as I slow down to exit the freeway or when going downhill. So for me, I get the benefits of the chip and get rid of the clunk!

When I put in the chip, I noticed that the thunk went away, as far as the noise goes. But the feeling of the transmission "sliping" is still there. It just that the chip has forced a quicker shift and it is no where near as noticable. Still think that there is a mechanical flaw in the transmission or torque converter itself.
Hey guy's,
Here is another idea for the problem. I went to my dealer to talk about a minor starting issue that I had . The mechanic said he wanted to try something with my truck & I said let's do it. He cleared out my computer & called Detroit via E-mail they intern E-mailed him a revised program for the computer which he tell's me they update over time for the complaint's that people have with the truck to make them run better. He then plug's it into my truck and botta bing,botta boom it's down loaded into my truck. This thing run's much better,better shift point's,smoother excelleration, pulls harder than before on excelleration,and no more tranny thunk,it actuall goes pretty well now. I'm sure not as good as a chip,but better than before ( as far as stock goes ). The only thing it did'nt get rid of was the rough idle at time's.
The only bad thing is when you gain a little more power or a little more sound you know what happen's. Yep!! Drive it harder than before . So much for a little better milage !
