the above post doesn't make alot of sense to me. usually a tranny with a higher torque rating is heavier and thus would cause the engine to have to produce more power/torque to get it moving and thus emissions would be higher. unless the 4r100 is a newer design that runs more efficiently than the 4r70w? anybody know? i did read in my owner's manual that the 4r100 "learns as you drive" so that it can tailor shifting to your preferences. no such mention was made of the 4r70w.

seems like alot of work to go through (installing the 4r100 in california s-crews only) when they could just as easily program different shift points into the 4r70w. i'm just really wondering if any california s-crews actually have the 4r100 or if that is just some rumor that got started here, or somewhere else.

btw, anytime you burn more fuel you are producing more emissions, right?

Cool

I have a California S-crew with a 4R70W . How about a show of hands from all those Californians with the 4R70W .

for those of you not sure how to check and see what tranny your s-crew has...just pop the hood and see what the tranny dipstick cap has on it. if it says "mercon v"...then it is the 4r70w. if is says just "mercon"...then it is the 4r100. these two tranny fluids are not interchangeable. thus you can't use "mercon v" in the 4r100, and vice versa.

So does that mean you can bolt a 4R100 tranny into our 4R70 trucks without changing the TCU?

My california truck has the 4R70W as do all SuperCrews. Now, only the 7700GVWR package gets the 4R100 according to the ordering guides and when I was test driving various trucks even the SuperCabs had 4R70W transmissions in them.

No one mentioned the Lightning's had the 4r100....

That is impression that Ford is using the 4r100 in the F150's(have one in the F250)

This must be with the 8800lb towing package in the F150.....

I could see them using the 4r100 in the Lightning and with say 3.73 gears or towing 7700 or 8800lbs...

The 4r100 is only rated at 500ftlbs...

The 4r70 cant handle that torque...

Different T/C I believe...

My new california screw has the 4r70w transmission (u code on door) as well as the merc v rating for transmission fluid. it has a build date of 03/2001. as far as i understand the earlier california models did come with the 4r100 because that is what transmission was certified to meet the LEV requirement (low emissions vehicle). i believe the only current f150 to have the 4r100 are the lighning, f150 with 7700 payload package (not available for the SC) and maybe the Harley Davidson edition.

The 7700GVWR package is not the tow rating of the vehicle. It is an option package that essentially gives you the old (pre-2000) F250LD complete with the 4R100 trans, 7-bolt wheels, 10.25" rear axle and 7700 GVWR (the max on the SuperCrew is 6750lb). The GVWR is the gross vehicle weight rating (basically the max that the vehicle can carry on it's 4 wheels) and is NOT the trailer tow rating. Unfortunately this option is not available on the SuperCrew. For the 2002MY this is available with 4.10 gears for an even higher tow rating and yet it still isn't available in on the SCrew.

from Kelly Blue Book...

627 Payload Pkg. --2700-lb. • 4WD Styleside w/139" W.B. 1101.00 1295.00
(GVWR 7700-lb.) (Payload is Reduced by 70-lbs. When in Combo w/Emission Equipment-422) (N/A 2WD Models, 4WD Styleside w/157" W.B. or 4WD Flareside) (N/A w/Off-Road Equipment Group-55R or Sport Group-94S or 94T) (Req's 99L 5.4L Engine & Auto Trans.-44E) Includes Larger Brakes; H.D. Frame, Springs & Shock Absorbers; H.D. Electrical/Cooling Group; 3.73 Axle Ratio; Argent Styled Steel (XL) or Chrome (XLT & Lariat) Wheels; (5) LT245/75R16D All Terrain OWL Tires & Snow Plow Capability.

FWIW, trans 44E is the 4R100 (44U would be the 4R70W).

Perhaps I am misreading the Ford info . Maybe you can translate this link for me . Just copy it into your web browser . I read 7700# trailer weight for Screw 4x4 5.4L Automatic .
