Post daytime running lights

I got a problem with my daytime running lights intermittently working. The switch will be on and nothing happens or when they do work, turn themselves mysteriously off. Also, the instrument panel dimer will activate when the daytime lights are activated and switch back to normal brightness when the lights mysteriously decide to shut themselves off.

Better check to see if your daytime running lights are really on..

Sounds like to me you are talking about the autolamp feature, not DRLs. If you have DRLs, (which I think are only on Canadian models) the switch is not used to activate them. It just activates the autolamp. Unfortunately there is no way to change the sesitivity and I think they tend to come on too late and go off too soon.

The owner's manual really bites! Tomorrow at lunch I'm going shopping for a good shop book.

You can get the Ford Shop manual at http://www.helm.com
I got it ($$$$$) but it has helped me with many things I have been doing with my truck. Good luck with your DRLs. I'm still searching for DRL Relay Block part number so I can enable them. If you have yours enabled and can check the part number... that would be great. Check out my web page for where to locate the Relay Block. http://www.voicenet.com/~storm/drl

Thanks

If you have a lariat, or an xlt with a power
seat, you have autolamp. It's the position on
the h/l sw. to the left of off. If you want that to ****ion as drl's, then cover the sensor on the dash (3or4 little slits in top
of dash) with something to block out sunlight-tape/checkbook/other opaque item.

1. I guess maybe I've missed a discussion somewhere in the past about relay blocks, resistors, and how the average person can use these to enable their DRL's.
2. For those of us that are "electronically challenged" the 2001 Ford truck accessories catalog I have lists the Daytime Running Lights as $57.14, recommends dealer installation and claims "The system automatically activates the low-beams at 75% of their normal operating power whenever the ignition is in the "on" position. Engineered to completely integrate with your vehicle's electrical system".
3. I have the Auto headlamps but would like the DRL's also. I'm not too excited about covering my dash sensor and having the headlamps burning at full power all the time. If I'm not mistaken, don't the tail lights come on with Auto lamps also? So, they'd be on all the time too.
I'm really thinking of seeing what the dealer would charge for labor to do the DRL installation...........

Cool

Updated part numbers on the DRLs. These work on my 2001 Screw. Installed them yesterday.

XL3Z-14A601-AA CNTR & BRKT AS
YL1Z-13B218-AA WIR ASY-HD/LP

See Storm's site at http://www.voicenet.com/~storm/drl for the location of the plugs. His pictures are right on the money. The resistor plug is actually plugged into a bracket on the frame. Just unplug it and plug in the resistor. You will need to get a stainless steel screw and nut to bolt it in. These items are very easy to install. Just plug them in and no cutting into the wire harness!

Cost about $75.00 with tax. This is about the same price as the aftermarket kit from Ford.

Wink

The day time running lights are already installed on our Canuck trucks!

It is law for all Canadian vehicle's to have daytime running lights installed on them from the factory before selling!

I Am Canadian....Cool!
