GOT REAR-ENDED
2-months I've had my Screw and now the worst has happened. I got crashed into saturday afternoon. Was waiting at a red light and all of a sudden BAAAMMM!
Woman crashed into me at at least 30 mph, was stuck under my truck. Fortunately everyone was OK, there were a few nicks on her daughters chin. They were not wearing seat belts.
It ws a 85? Buick Century, the hood was curled up to the windshield and the radiator was smeared on top of the engine.
Just got an estimate for the damage today $3600+. New bumper, left fender, repair right fender, remove back glass and repair dents in cab from bed slamming into it.
To make it worse the woman had no insurance, no registration for the vehicle. Lucky for me I have uninsured mototrists coverage. Unlucky for me is the $500 deductible.
Police could only give her a bunch of tickets and nothing else.
Truck is still driveable and I will drop it off Wednesday for repairs.
I will post pics of my damage if I can figure out how to.
By the way the woman lost her brakes and said she tried the emergency brake and it wouldn't work. Maybe if it had been inspected this would have never happened. Anyway now the car is off the road and you are all safe from that car.

DrJ,
sorry to hear about the truck. Glad everybody was ok. It`s a shame that the cops can`t do more than give her a few damn tickets, that sucks !! and now your insurance has to cover the damage so your rate will probably go up because of someone else`s carelessness. Hope you don`t have any problems getting the truck back to like new.

DrJeffro,
I feel for you and glad everyone is okay. Mine(SuperCab F150) was (is) about 8 months old and got t-boned by a school bus. Luckily my insurance company agreed to take over the process of repairs with the school district since the district is self-insured. Hope they get your truck fixed soon and get you back on the road. Good thing for the uninsured motorist coverage or you could have had this drug out for a long time trying to get it repaired besides using your own funds. School district is already jerking me around on repairs and been caught in some lies already. Worth the money I pay for insurance just to have them deal with it on my behalf.
Hated you had to wreck your truck to save someone else from that car
Mine starts the metal/parts/paint repairs on Wed finally too.

Sorry about your truck. Hopefully it can be repaired so you can't tell.
It sounded like your bed partially got mashed up to the cab, or did I misunderstand?
The way people drive these days, I leave my big hitch extension on all the time to give them something to "chew on".

Femseadoo,
I tow my boat every weekend this time of year but always take the hitch draw bar out when my boat gets put away. If you get rear ended with the hitch the bumper does not do its job and the frame gets bent at the front of the hitch mount. I saw a Silverado where I work a few months ago that this happened to. The frame buckled so badly that it bent up into the bed because of hitch. The whole bed had to be replaced. The bumper did not have a scratch on it.

cpafay,
Thanks, I didn't know about the frame bending. If you had propane like I do, where the spare tire should be, would you leave the hitch bar in or out? I was just looking for some extra protection.

Femseadoo,
Now that is a tough one. If I had a tank of propane back there, I probably wouldn't care about the frame as much as the tank. I think in that case I would leave the draw bar installed.
Hey, what kind of sea doo(s) do you have? I sold my Speedster at the end of last season and just got a 19'Chaparral this year. Kind of miss the old Speedster, though.
BTW, where did you put the spare?

My baby got rearended too (VW Jetta!) and it cost $6K to fix. Had to replace both side fenders (fiberglass cracked), R&R the rear bumper, fix dents in the tailgate and back of cab, then paint the parts.

cpafay,
The spare sits in the bed
PWC Seadoo's: 96' XP, modified just to where I don't have to use racing gas, lots of goodies, and a 93' modified SPX, which is for sale.
I'm kind of surprised that both of these rear-end photos have the entire bumper going down instead of up, but they look like 4x2's? With my 4x4, I swear that people look like they are trying to park their cars underneath it. What happened to a one car length in between and "don't be a bumper humper"?

Hi DrJeffro,
I'm so sorry to hear of what happened, but thank God neither you nor the child were seriously injured. It's one thing to be broke and a single parent perhaps, but quite another to risk everyone else's life on the road from a car with no brakes at all, as this one apprently had none whatsoever, accoridng to her story.
Just one quick tip in case you might not be aware, and it's important especially with an expensive brand new vehicle like yours, in most states you have a 3-year effective statute of limitations against the insurance company (whether it's your company or hers, doesn't matter) for proper repairs. Meaning, if it gets fixed and looks fine now, but a year or two later you find other problems resulting from this collision, it's still covered for a total of 3 years from date of claim. Many people aren't aware and thus get screwed or stuck with later expenses for repairs out of pocket, so just in case, I thought I'd let you know.
Best of luck,

Femseadoo,
My truck is a 4x4. The car that hit me slid under and dragged the bumper back with the top of its hood. Actually, it was fortunate since my tailgate was spared (another $700?).
My estimate is already near $4K.
Mike,
Thanks for the tip. I wasn't aware of that at all. Anything happens down the road I'll know what to suspect.

OK, now it makes more sense why the bumper is the way it is.
Those bills are getting up there. If it were my truck, I would take her to small claims; you'll "win" and they'll file a lien against her that will stay on her credit report. Who knows, maybe she'll win the lottery some day or get a better job.
