Which way do I turn oil filter to get it off, I'm lying underneath looking up. Is it clockwise or counterclockwise. I'm not new to fliter changing but this darn thing is sooooo tight I wanna make sure I go the correct way. Thanks.

Oil filters are just like bolts. If you're looking at the end of it, turn it counter-clockwise to remove, clockwise to tighten.

Question

On a slightly on-topic note:

Has anyone tried one of those drain plug/ball valve dealies (for making oil changes easier) on their SCrew? My 5.4L SCrew should be in soon, and I'd like to start doing my own changes. Anything to make it as easy as possible is OK by me!

Yes, I have the Fumoto valve. I drain mine right into a couple milk jugs using a small piece of hose. (I have the one with the hose fitting.)

The filter is still a bitch, but I have a procedure and a filter tool that works so it ain't so bad anymore.

I really wish Ford hadn't taken away the remote oil filter like they had back in 98. DAMN I loved that thing. Now it's back to performing surgery to get the filter off. I do it so often though I've got a nice routine for it... it makes it easier to use the oil filter socket available at any auto parts store with has the 3/8" socket hole, and using a convert so I can use the more stubby 1/4" wrench. Or if I could find a stubby 3/8"... hmm...

I used a standard metal band style filter wrench, with a swiveling handle. It worked fine for my first oil change. Since then I've been able to remove them by hand. Don't use the wrench to put the new filter on, oil the gasket and 3/4 turn after the gasket contacts the base. If you need a wrench to take the filter off you problably tightened it more than you needed to when you put it on.

I always have to use a wrench to get mine off. I tighten it by hand as much as I can. Have you ever had one come off? Probably not... it just worries me that it would only take once.

I too have a process for getting it off now but the first time... what a bitch! Between having never done it before and the factory putting it on as tight as humanely possible it took me about an hour. Now, well maybe five minutes!

Bring back the remote filters!
