Post Supercrew quality

Hi Guys,

I just ordered a supercrew with the 5.4 last week and after reading this form I am starting to think that I might cancel the sale.

All I have read about is piston slap, trannies that don't work right, wrong radiators, blown passenger head gaskets etc...

I am really concerned about these engine and tranny problems. What is the percentage of 5.4 engines or supercrews having these problems? After reading this form it sounds like a big percentage.

I really don't want to add this kind of stress in my life of spending 30k dollars and then have a vehicle with an engine/tranny that doesn't work right.

Sean

Don't sweat it man! This site is just a place for people to express thier thoughts, opinions and experiences to others. You figure that a club with about 10,000 members don't all have the Screw, so they don't have "our" problems. Just figure that (for argument purposes) there are 2,000 people on this board with Screws, there are probably 100 times this many Screws out there now. God I can't drive down the street without seeing one. Not every one has problems. I personally have had no mechanical problems with my truck. Of course the radiator is the wrong one, but it is a simple fix. I read the posts and check my truck for the problems listed by the others, and they are all valid complaints or situations. Some people are just too particular. No offence meant because I am as picky as most. If you have a problem, there are warranties and laws that protect you the buyer from most of these problems. I have never second guessed myself about the purcase of this truck. If it were me, I'd keep it, there is not a better looking truck on the road! If the problems woory you, go buy a S*itvrolet and see where you end up in a year. I'll almost guarantee that you will be walking back to the Ford dealer kicking yourself in the A$$ wishing you had bought a Ford to begin with!

I doubt it regarding the walking back to a Ford dealer. I currently own a 91 Chevy c1500 with 175,000 miles with no major problems. I have to say that I have a good Chevy. I love the Ford SuperCrew, but don't own one yet. I too am concerned about the quality and have posted regarding it. I don't worry so much as to the problems, but the response from Ford. They don't seem to care about the problems, such as the radiator issue. Some posters claim Ford isn't replacing theirs.

Anyway, don't bash a Chevy just because you own a Ford. I have owned Ford's, Chevy's, Dodge's, Toyota, and Nissan's. The only difference I see between them is the name on the side.

The Supercrew(F-150) is a fine truck. Consumer Reports rates it recommended. It is the most reliable product Ford makes which overall is quite good.

To give you an idea Toyota which, due to six sigma processes, has 13 problems per 100 cars. Ford ranks second at 16 per 100, GM and Chrysler rate 26 per 100. These are truck numbers only.

I have had two things(door seal and ignition switch) go bad on mine however(and this is key) my dealer is quite willing to fix these things and keep me happy. Which they have. I don't what to attribute the radiator issue to, perhaps assembly line error or perhaps too many F-150 configurations, as opposed to Toyota's very few types. Whatever the case, if you can financially step up to the plate as we have(it's a big step) I think you will find for the money it is the finest new truck on the market. Top to bottom. It's the conclusion I came to after much study.

Good luck.

PS. Not that I am one, but I'm told more millionaires drive F-150's than any other vehicle made. Very discerning people in that group.

Rickg-

I do feel that I have a right to bash Chevy. I have owned two of them prior to buying my first Ford. They were both nothing but trouble for me. Sure the parts were easy to find and replace, I wonder why that is. Are they really replaced so often that GM decided to make it easier to replace such cheap parts? Before I bought my 96 F-150 I had bought a 96 Silverado. It sat in my driveway for two weeks before I dumped it back on the dealers lot. It was the biggest POS I have ever had the displeasure of owning. As for my two Fords since then, not a single issure close to those of the Chevy I had. Besides that, who in their right mind is dumb enough to go buy an over priced Chevy, when there is a by far better vehicle made by Ford for less money? You're right, you got "a" good Chevy. As for being just names on the side and vehicles being the same, no way man. I have experienced them all, and you can't sit there and tell me that a Nissan can hold a candle to the Toyota. Every vehicle manufacturer is different in their own ways.

Long story short- If the "problems" (which are very trivial) bother you, go buy another Chevy and take your chances there. But believe me, from experience, nothing compares to a Ford.

Cool

My buddy picked up his brand new GMC 1 ton Duramax diesel two weeks ago.....pulled his 26' holiday trailer 800km back home and warped the passengers head on it!

Had it towed into the dealer and they said that they are having a few problem's with the aluminum heads warping on the new duramax diesels...my buddy said perfect and now has to wait 3-4 weeks for a new Duramax head to be shipped in...he is now driving his 1989 Ford 3/4 farm truck around!

And you thought we had problems.....HA!

Thumbs up

Back to Sparker's original post. I am extremely happy with my truck. I have not noticed any of the problems posted here and would buy the truck again tomorrow. It is the best looking truck on the road, it is comfortable, it runs great, it handles well for a truck, it feels well built and I could go on. I went from a Nissan with 170k on it and was apprehensive because I am used to Jap quality, but have no reservations now. I think you are going to see a lot of people posting their problems on a site like this for any make. Just wanted to lety you know I love my SCrew.

I would buy another SCREW in a second....Ford trucks are solid!!! If you look you will find many more problems with the other makes. Their quality is why Ford has so many more sales than the other brands.
I had a auto trim business servicing mainly dealerships for several years. I did notice that when I spent an extended time at one dealer I would think...Wow there is a lot of cars being towed in here, these cars must have problems....(that includes imports like toyota, honda, and even mercedes) But you have to keep it in perspective. Folks inherently remember and mention the negative things. Remember how it goes...do a few good and maybe a few find out, do one bad thing and everyone will know. Anyway I urge you to look for yourself and test the others. I have and I found Ford to be the best by far. Good Luck!!

I have owned my SuperCrew since April of last year, I now have 32,000 on my truck and have not had on problem with it yet. I plan to bring it to the dealer to change the tranny fluid with some Red Line synthetic. I would buy another again.

I have had a couple of small problems with mine in 16K miles, but nothing that makes me regret my purchase. Overall, much better than any vehicle I have ever owned which includes new GM, Honda, and VW.

Also, I don't even care about the radiator issue. I am very particular about my vehicle but this is a battle I am not interested in. The whole darned tow package only cost me $298.00 which includes tranny cooling, battery, alternator, shock upgrades, plus the hitch and wiring. So, Ford got one over on me with the radiator. At most I figure they owe me $20 or so for the upgrade, and my time is worth more than this for having the dealer rip out my old one, install a new one, and potentially screw something else up in the process. (And I don't even have a problem with the one that I have) My $.02.

Let's not kill our resale any faster than we have to..

Well said and I feel exactly the same way. My time is way more important than fighting for a few bucks and like you said having them install a new one risking screwing up something else to my perfect truck..Do you think Ford would put a radiator that would overheat when pulling a trailer, to save 20-50 bucks??? I think an engine is worth more than that. This radiator is fine and I'm sure alot of you out there pull trailers with max loads...I haven't seen one post tell me where an engine overheated pulling a load because of this supposibly wrong raditor installed. This whole radiator thing is blown way out of proportion if you ask me. Just my opinion.

I might as well ad my $0.02. My last 3 trucks have been Ford. I have had my Super Crew going on 6 months now. If someone were to ask me if I would buy another Screw, I would buy in a second and have no regrets!!
