Red face Radiator issue w/ 2001

Folks-

There have been a lot of posts (mostly on separate forums) regarding the wrong radiators for 2001 models. It seems that with the towing package, you are supposed to get not only the hitch and wiring harness, but also the super cooling radiator and a heavy duty alternator. Well, if you look at the specs, the primary difference between the standard and supercooling is the standard is 1.02" and the supercooling is 1.42" (as well as almost 2 qt capacity difference for coolant). Well, after looking at mine, I took it down to the dealer and the mechanic there measured it at 1.02". Hmmmm. They are doing a query to the Ford engineers for me to find out what is going on. The service manager said he will replace it if it is the wrong one, but wants to check numbers, etc..

Questions:

- Has any other S'Crew owner with the Class III towing package checked their radiator?
- If you've taken it to the dealer, what has the response been?

I am curious to see what the overall reaction is with this problem from the Ford side.

I will post the results from my dealers queries once I find somethign out. He stated it would be a day or two.

rasch I too have the same problem as almost everyone else with the towing package. I have not been to the dealer yet but I was wondering were I can find the documentaion stateing that it is supposed to be 1.42" vs 1.02". Everything I found has just said a heavy duty radiator, nothing specific. I would like to go into the dealer with something in print.

GO to this link:

Under technical specifications, go to cooling system specifications. It outlines the difference. Also, my delaer pulled up his book (had a brown cover) and verified what this webpage shows. We didn't talk part numbers and I will let them figure it out, but they measured it and are checking up for me.

I have the wrong one too! I've got an appointment next Tuesday to have it checked out. I hope it won't be a bad experience. I'm going in armed w/ my window sticker, the specs page from the 2001 source guide, and also part #'s.

I can't believe that Ford made such a blunder! There's evidently a lot of new trucks out there w/ the wrong one.

Good luck and let us know how it goes! I will post my experience as well as soon as I hear back from the dealer.

I was doing some thinking about this, and although I don't believe any of this was done intentionally, I was wondering if it would cause a recall fromm Ford. I don't think it would because it is not really a safety issue. More than likely, they probably realize they made a mistake and will fix them as folks recognize there is a mistake and bring their vehicles in.

Sorry to hear it, Jim. Really though, it is not the end of the world. As long as Ford is willing to make right, it is not a problem in my view. The question remains though, will they make it right.

Let's hope so.

Count me in! I have the class three package
and got the 1.02 radiator. Saw the parts guy at Mahwah Ford today. Gave him what I picked off this site, and politely asked him to look into it and consult with my salesperson reguarding replacement. Truck has 1,400 miles
and was built at the Kansas City plant.
Build date was 12/15/2000

Wow! I am beginning to wonder if I should instead ask the question: "Does anybody have the right radiator with the towing package? If so, please post a picture of it so we all know what it looks like."

Question

right one or not?

i have the tow package which should have the heavy duty radiator. upon first view all i saw was a 1.02" radiator. after taking out a few screws and lifting the plastic i noticed another approx. 1.02" radiator approx. 1.5" forward of the first. although it does not look identical to the first, it is the same size and has two approx. .5" metal tubes going down toward the engine block on the passenger side.

another 1.5 inches in front of that theres two other coolers down low. passenger side is approx. 8" X 10" in size and on the drivers side the other is approx. 2" X 8". these are obviously the transmission and oil coolers.

so did i get the right one? although i'm unsure, it appears i do, it's just not quite as i would have visioned it.

feel free to provide your inputs.

also, i went to 4 different treads on this site, copied all the posts and emailed them to one of the folks on the tech manual site. below is their response:

Please contact our Consumer Relationship Center on 1-800-392-FORD or email fordcrc@ford.com with your concerns. I am sure they will assist. Thanks you.

According to the service guy at the dealership, the one at the front is not a radiator for the engine, it is cooling for something else (transmission?). I saw that originally and first thought maybe I had a 2 coil radiator, but unfortunately they stopped putting those in a few years back (at least according to a lot of old Ford owners on this site).

I am going to see what my service rep says. He says he will let me know something on Friday. They've been pretty good to deal with so far.

I met with the dealer and show him all the info that I had on the 2001 SCrew Super cooling. I have one doc that shows that it is a two row 2.02" core and one that shows a one row 1.42" core. My dealer orderd the 1.42" one row and the 2.02" two row from a 2001 lightning and said if the lightning RAD fits will use it if not will put in the 1.42 so will see next week.

I have yet to see any specs for 2001 that show a 2 coil system. At the link in one of my earlier posts, it clearly shows a single coil at 1.42". Where did you see the specs for a 2 coil?

Also, regarding measuring, I wasn't sure where/how to measure, so I took mine to the dealer and let a service guy measure it. I believe he measured the thickness of the coil area that you can see a little bit of from the passenger side. He said it was just a tiny bit over 1".

I'll keep the info here, but I guess I have the same thing as Kenny. If Rasch is correct, and I have no reason to doubt him, I too have the wrong configuratioin.

Posted this under engines, but thought I'ld repeat here.
I checked my raditor just now on my new SCrew, and I am more confused than before. Here is what I found:
Towards the cabin, there is a core with part number XL3H-AB, about 1" wide. In front of that, about 1.5", there is another core, almost the same size, and although I can't tell if it is the double core radiator, It does have a cable with a HD tag on it.
Even further in front, but low down, there are 2 other cores about the size of a piece of paper, right next to each other. I suspect one of these is a tranny cooler. Not sure what the other is.
So do I have a double radiator? What I have read seems to indicate I should have one radiator at 1.42" Can someone tell me what all these "coolers" are for?
