Question 82 1/2" Garage Door

Get my SCrew next week.
I'm getting 17" wheels and my garage door
is only 82 1/2" high (rest of garage is
plenty high, only door is low)
The way I had it figured I would have a
good 3" to spare as I enter the garage.
Hubby says there is no way my truck is going
to fit in the door.
Is he right or am I?

Airial,

I am sure that your screw will! My garage doors are 7'. If you take away for the trim boards, I would guess that they are close to 82 1/2". I have a 99' Expedition 4X4 (wife's truck) with a roof rack and 17" wheels, and it fits fine with room to spare. The only thing that hits is the tip of the antenna, and it only hits the rubber weatherstripping. I also have a 97' F-150 4x4 ORP with a 3" body lift and 35's (which amounts to about 5" of extra height) and it also fits with 3-4" between the top of the cab and the top of the door. I did have to put a shorted antenna on it, which i purchased at a local auto parts store.

Hope that this helps!

Airial,
You did not say whether you have a 4X2 or 4X4, but my garage door clearence is less than 82" and my truck clears the opening with only tip of antenna rubbing.

You will be fine. We just picked up our new Screw a month ago and worried the whole time it might not fit in the garage. We have the 17" wheels on the off-road package. Previously owned a supercab and the problem was that the antenna caught on the garage door. It managed to pull the garage door down onto the hood of the truck. Cost a few hundred to repair. Just be careful of the antenna. Hope you enjoy your truck as much as we do. (from a female owner in PA)

Thumbs up

Mine goes in the garage with room to spare, but have had to back out of the entrance to underground parking under a building downtown though. The clearance on a couple of office building garages here are 6'6" (or less), but most are 7'which is fine.

For the antenna problem, I pulled off the black ball on top with pliers, clipped of a couple of inches with side cutters, filed, stuck the ball back on, and touched up with some black spray paint. Good as new.

Thank you for all the info !
I will relax now that I know it will fit in
my garage door.
I would hate to leave it out in this wonderful Nebraska weather we are having.

Can't wait to get my truck next week.
Island Blue/Silver, 4x4, 5.4, 17" tires,
10 spoke wheel, sliding rear window,
I'm having them put on the Ford factory
black running board.
I'm not crazy about that running board,
but it would be more practical for myself
and 6 year old grandson than a nerf bar.

Whoa......be careful !!

You should have enough clearance but check the specs...4X4 XLT SCrew with 16" tires is 76.9 inches tall, probably taller with 17" and different tires. My antenna is my guide in parking garages, etc. it's five inches taller than the rear of the cab and hits sprinkler pipes and other objects when clearance is tight.

Also, most residential garage doors stop short of full height, but can be adjusted to open beyond the top frame. Watch out for the door opener (if equipped) mine is lower than the door opening, but my door is 90" tall.

I measured before buying, but it wouldn't have changed my vehicle selection, just given me an accurate total cost of ownership (door modification). Good luck !!!!

I'll second that "Be Careful". My 4x4 with 17" wheels clears my 7 foot (84") door opening by a few inches (maybe 3") and I re-adjusted my door opener to make sure it was above the door jamb. Mine also clears with the moon roof cracked open and sticking up in the rear but not by much. I'll measure it next time I think about it in case you have the moon roof. You may need to remember to keep the roof closed if you have one.

Maybe I better get a carpenter out here to
work on my garage. With the way my garage is built, it wouldn't take much to add a few inches to the enterance.
But, I hate to admit to hubby that he was right about my truck not fitting in the door
so I'll wait till next week and see if it
will fit.

We have the 17" wheels and moonroof and it fits our 82 1/2 door. It is close and we take off the ANT. We have to fold in the Mirrors.
Not much room for this baby in our garage but it does fit when they call for snow. The length was our big problem, only about two inches left with the front plate holder touching the front wall.
Good luck.
Hey CPAFAY, please be careful with the ANT. mod. I had a F250 in front of me in the Central Parking at Boston Logan who did the same thing, and well the Ant. cleared but the roof did not. That hurt to watch. I was going to do the same mod but not now.

Airial,

I have the 5 inch RCD lift on my 4x4 Lariat with stock 17 inchers and it makes it fine through my standard 7 ft. garage door. It sure appears like it won't make it but no sweat. If your garage door doesn't open up high enough you can adjust the travel on it at the opener real easy for extra height.

I cut my antenna but it is still a good 3 inches over my roof line, so I can still use it as a guage for an imminent crunch. Come to think of it though, I did adjust my garage door opener so it pulls the door beyond the opening all of the way.

I also back in and have a golf tee hanging from the door track that I align with my antenna in order to stop at exactly the right spot. This along with a couple of pieces of black tape on the floor get me in with room to spare. I still have about 28 inches in front to spare which allows me to open the side door in order to let the dog in and out.

Airial,
I agree that the factory boards are a compromise, but can't be beat for practicality. My 4 year old can climb in by himself, which saves my back from lifting 40 lbs into his booster seat way up there. I couldn't imagine him or my wife stepping on wet nerfs. Plus, they make washing these huge trucks a lot easier.

I've got a 4x2 w/ the Fabtech 6 1/2 in lift. I have 305/70/16 (33") tires. My truck sits a little higher than a 4x4. My garage door opening is 83.5" tall. As you can see below, it fits with a few inches to spare.

Thanks for the tip with the antenna. I to cut about 3" off. I kept the tip in the garage. After reading your post, I pulled the ball off Filed and reattached to the antenna. A little black paint, and it looks as good as new. Still sits about 2-2.5 above the cab.
