2k1 lightning taillights - BUMMER =(
I Don't follow the logic....
In Texas, the DOT code, as far as inspection goes, states that Rear Tailights must be Red in color (EITHER the lens or the bulb) and have a red reflector. The front blinkers may be any shade from amber to white, which explains the older Ch@# models with the white blinkers.
I just had my roomates '98 STX inspected last week, it has clear corners, xenon bulbs, smoked euro tails, and no problems.
Again I emphasize this is for inspection purposes.
I have the '01 Lightning headlights, corners and tails on my '01 Supercrew, purchased aftermarket from a Ford dealer in Houston. My sister-in-law works there, and she wasn't questioned about on what type truck it was going to be installed.
As far as police ticketing me because I have Lightning lights on a Screw, let's just say, I feel my rights as a consumer entitle me to outfit my vehicle however I choose as long as no laws are violated.
I don't mean to call someone a liar, but really, are the FL police so up on vehicle modifications, that they are aware what type tailights are sold on every model vehicle on the road? What's next? Navigator rims on a XL? Expedition consoles in a Supercab? Pull them over and ticket them for aftermarket installations? Where does it all end? How about the lifted or lowered trucks?
Any feedback to this, or am I deadwrong?
Peace,
DLF

I agree this is BS, but that's what both the state trooper and the judge told me. If that's the case, I'm amazed I haven't gotten more tickets here. I proved that they were Ford OE lights, but that didn't seem to matter to them. They're just always looking for some way to screw people.

I wouldn't be suprised. Hell, they spend all day in traffic looking at cars. I can tell when people have switched tailights. It's not that hard to figure out... Let's see, a Supercrew with clear taillights. I've seen exactly none of those around here. When I do see one, I'll first think, is that a L on a trailer? then I'll think, someone replaced the lights on that truck.
But if the cop thinks he's smart enough to know you've changed them out, he oughta know when he's looking at OEM parts vs. aftermarket pieces.

I found a Link from AZ that covers vehicle code in great detail... it is in this forum under Legal Lighting. It is a great post, explainin in great detail about the requirements for after market taillights. What I did not see was whether they are targeting Supercrews with Lightning lights. That is the point I don't get. Are the lightning lights illegal on another model pickup, even if the lights themselves are compliant?
Thanks,

I have Lightning Tails in my Screw........... and the only attention I have drawn form the Local Law is ..........
"WOW!!!! --- nice truck"
I will tell you ............before this I had an Dodge Ram.... I had it for 5 years and it was rare i got any complements on it......... with the Screw .. it is a regular occurance.
I love the tails........ and it is marvelous for my ego......... well sometimes it is hard to fit my swelled head in the Screw
so long ...........

2001 lightning taillights
i dont know who the hell is telling you that you cannot order lightning taillights without a vin number authorizing that you are a lightning owner. that is totally bull****..... whoever is telling you this is 'WRONG".. i am a partsmanager of a ford dealership and have ordered and installed lightning taillights on my supercrew and at no point in time did i get any codes or references to the above situation... if you want some and cant get any, email me and ill gladly get you some......caribou30@hotmail.com
I got pulled over by the CHP who felt inclined to ticket me for my front tinted windows. He also said my "L" tails were ILLEAGAL! I said "how can that be? They are a Ford product and are stock on the Lightning trucks." He said "ANY modifications to factory installed parts is against the law." He wrote me up for the tint but let me off on the lights. Just a partial JACKA$$!
Well here in Virginia it is illegal to have aftermarket light of any kind. I talked to the guy who was doing my state inspection the other day and he said that they have been told to fail any vehicle that has aftermarket lights on it. He said that if it dont have the actual Ford oval on the light then it was considered aftermarket. He said the L lights have the oval on it, so he would pass it. Cops have been instructed to crack down on them and the highly annoying bright white headlights! They are trying to stop companies from shipping them to VA, just like they do with Radar Detecters!! Its a bunch of BS!!!
