Strange Electrical Problem

After running errands all morning, we set out on the afternoon set. In reverse, the truck idles irratically, and the ABS light remains on. We shut it down and take the other car. Upon returning home and poking around a bit, here's what it does:

Disconnected the battery, turned headlights on for several minutes, shut them off, reconnect battery. No change. Truck idles ok in Park, very rough in Reverse, somewhat normal in Drive. I also notice that the headlights are on very dimly even though the headlight switch is "off". Turn them to "auto" kills the motor.

Disconnected battery again. Removed Superchip. Same results as above.

Preparing for a trip to the dealer Monday I guess. I can hear the a relay switching about every 5 seconds or so with the motor not running, I suspect it's ABS related as that's the only warning light on when the engine is running.

I don't kow how it will drive (it's parked in the garage) but based on how it's behaving in reverse, I'm wondering if I should have it towed. The dealer is only a mile away, and the truck has 3900 miles thus far.

Any comments appreciated!!

First things first make sure that you leave the superchip out, so there is no questions about that. Also if you have the cover to the computer where the chip goes, put that in.

If you have AAA then have it towed, if not drive it and have your wife follow you.

Sounds like a possible short to me???

Anyways, good luck, and let us know what they fix.

Well, there were 3 problems:

#1: ABS light on-- ABS Valve assembly replaced. Also some digging in the instrument panel and a wiring assembly repair.

#2: Engine quits in reverse or when lights turned on-- Idle Air Control valve assembly replaced.

#3: Dim driver headlight-- Wiring assembly repair.

Had this not been under warranty, $45 in parts, $360 in labor. I'm bewildered by two "wiring repairs", geez my 2000 scab went 28k under my ownership with nothing but oil changes. Certainly not thinking that "at Ford, Quality is Job One" song in my head at the moment though! Why the headlight harness needed repairs is kind of scary, I have the factory bulbs, no upgrades there. If the ABS failed in my case and caused some unusual circumstances, I would hope that the headlights wouldn't be prevented from performing! What if this happened at night, and BOTH lights quit....

I must give a plug to my local dealer though, Griffin Ford. After dropping the truck off Sunday, they called me about 1:30 on Monday and told me it was done. All problems appeared to be fixed based on the ride home. I was afraid of getting one of those "we need to order parts" calls, figuring I'd be out for a few days atleast. Although this is the second truck I bought new from them in 2 years, I hope they don't get to know my name in the service department--- if you know what I mean.

I'm really starting to worry about that Idle Air Control. I have lost count on how many times that has been replaced on the 2001 SCREWS (mentioned on this board).

Sounds like maybe there should be a recal on that part. I don't know what it takes for Ford to put out a recal, but if this keeps up then we may see on on this part.

There seems to be a high percentage of SuperCrew owners with IAC problems when compared to the other models. It's making me wonder, why? Could it be isolated to a particlular run of IACs that ended up on the SuperCrew assembly line? This is the only thing that makes any sense other than there's somebody there that's sabotaging them. Either way, I have to conclude that if you got a bad one and it's replaced, your problems should be over.

Thoughts?
