2k1 lightning taillights - BUMMER =(
I talked to Gary at fordpartsonline.com and it looks as if Ford is only going to sell the 2k1 lightning clear tails to registered L owners (VIN is necessary and the whole thing is logged to prevent too many purchases I guess). sad because i think these lights would look great (and be legal!) on a black screw =(

I have ggod news for you!! If you go to www.autosyndicate.com they just released the altezzas for our trucks!! clikc on clears and then click on the ford logo that will appear on the next page and scroll down. I have the crystal eye projection headlights on my Supercrew and they are absolutely sweet!! I would recommend them, especially with some 100w hyper white bulbs. Later
yep i've seen those... unfortunately they aren't street legal... that (other than styling) is one of the main draws of the ford part...
regards,
Wes

Pesos, glad you remembered about the lights being illegal. Just to remind you all, there are no aftermarket light upgrades legal in ANY STATE. Altezza's and APC will all have problems when people start sending them back. APC has already recalled over 50,000 because they are not legal, or DOT certified, even though they have a DOT stamp on them. NHTSA is now going after stores that sell the aftermarket lights, and that includes online ordering too.
Now some local and state police departments could care less about this, but in California, they do, and you will get cited for it.
Just wanted to remind everyone. And Pesos, we paid the same price for our trucks. Have fun with it, and get a Superchip, it's worth the money.
Az.
If you can get the 2001 lightning taillights, they are legal. They're straight from the manufacturer, just like the Lexus lights are.

I have seen several posts fom az, and am really confused. I know I came in on this subject way down the line, but could you give a quick rundown on which lights supposedly are illegal, and which are not?
Maybe a whole topic on the subject in in order.
Is it the fixture itself, the bulb, the color, what?
Is it all lights, or just taillights?
Help!!!!!!

I'm just putting together the points of two different comments to suggest that perhaps Ford Motor Company is more constrained than it appears.
One reply stated that it is illegal to "upgrade" any light, in any state, period. Although that doesn't seem very logical to me, it may very well be true.
If it is, then Ford is also protecting itself by selling L lights to L owners only, even though the owner is ultimately liable for breaking the law.
If these things are all true, then Ford is most likely not being ignorant of what its customers want, but rather avaoiding another black eye.

By the way, I've already had trouble with my 01 L tails on my screw. I got a ticket for them, took it to court, and they finally threw it out, not because they found they are legal, but because they were not supposed to be sold to me in the first place. So, down here in Florida, I guess they don't blame me for putting them on, they blame the dealer for selling them to me. Nevermind that I provided them with the Ford safety certification published by NHTSA, which took me quite awhile to obtain, but I got off, that's what counts I guess.
As for buying them, I know of two places that will sell them to you. www.oemfordparts.com and www.fordpartsnetwork.com . I recently got quotes from both of them, and they are considerably cheaper than the Ford prices.
Good luck.

I was sitting here chuckling at LongTime because he said the same thing I was thinking (he just got here first).
Then I read the follow-up posts and agree with ssabin. Why would lights perfectly legal on an L not be legal on a screw? Seems like a convenient method of making sure people don't use unapproved aftermarket lights. Just ticket everyone for what doesn't *appear* stock.
If that's the case, then I feel really sorry for the poor sap that bought the bright red screw from a Ford dealer in Raliegh. It was customized by an SVT shop and had a lowering kit, ram-air hood, and guess what - clear lights!

Well, if you can prove by having a Ford dealer pull up your VIN in the computer that your truck came from the dealer with everything on it, then you have a case. Otherwise, be careful what you do, because the cops are a$$holes about it. Believe me, I have run into it.
Those white headlights suck! They blind other drivers and aside from that serve absolutely no other purpose... I thank the police for getting them off the road!!!
Phat.....please, give me a break.
