Clear Tail Lights -- The Answer
Screwtoy, the only reason you sounded mad was the double post and the "bs" part about the tickets. There is some history about pulling cars over for clear side markers, then checking under the hood for carb info.
I'll give you the short version: First, in the town I work we had a major import racer drag problem..300-400 cars a night in the industrial part of town. All is fine and dandy until the fatal crashes start. Then the gangs shootings start.
Well enforcement was the main deterant to these, how should I put it in a politically correct way, "pieces of sh#t". So equipment stops turned into full auto inspections, and sure enough, guns, drugs, and fatal crashes came down.
Now, I'm not against modifying vehicles, hell, I'm going to do it myself to my rig, but do it legally. Illegal sidemarkers are a hazard because they do not have the side reflector. The reflector might not sound like much, but take a look at your rig on a dark street, then shine a light and see what a difference that side marker makes..all of a sudden you can see the vehicle. If it prevents a crash it's worth it.
That's the short story. And don't worry, I don't take anything personally, I have worse things come my way, I just want everyone to know what can happen if you change your stock lighting with illegal lighting.
The issue with CARB, smog products, and engine modification is enforced by law enforcment since it is covered by the vehicle code.
Take care, and drive safely.
Az.
Ps: APC.net is the main seller of after market illegal lighting, even though it says street legal. NHTSA has an investigation on the company, and they have never responded to my email about thier illegal products with the tag of "100 % street legal".

Pesos,
Just to let you know in most states (including North Carolina, where I work) the lights that are in the online store have NOT been approved for use on the street. The reflectors are red, but the fade testing has not been approved on any aftermarket clear taillight lenses for the F-Series trucks at all. Just like the other two officers who have posted replies, it's really more a liability issue than anything else, but the last thing you want is to have a contributing circumstance in a traffic accident against you. Your insurance company will hate it too.

Pesos, like Screwcop (nice name by the way) said, NO after market lights are legal at this time in any state. And since you live in the bay area, I guarentee if you put them on your soon to be ordred truck, you will get pulled over and cited. And it's not a simple fix it ticket.
Right now, the only way to put a legal white rear lense on would be to order the 2001 lightning lenses. As you can see in the picture, there is a side red reflector, and all factory lights have passed all gov't testing.
For anyone who has the APC rear lenses that say 100 % street legal, they have recalled over 24,000 sold because they do not meet DOT standards, and they failed NHTSA's test. They are refunding money, but you have to contact them, they are not contacting the consumer they sold to.
take care,

AZ2528: I remember reading the story about the ricer racers in the paper. I'm an Air Traffic Controller and live and work in Fremont.

Chistoso35, I'll have to swing by if you work on central to see the truck. I happen to work the northend of town, I'd like to see your truck and the mods in person.

Are any of you interested in the Euro-clears or Altezza's? I e-mailed APC and Procarware and APC said that they are working on ones for the Crew, but don't have an eta. Do you guys want the ones your looking at because they are available now?
I'm going to hold out for the Altezza's, which are legal and have a chrome backround with the red round lights. I think they'll look awesome on my silver Screw, but I don't think they look good on dark colors.
