Post Hey Dtrosch!!!!?????

Dtrosch,

Will your bed extender and the ARE - Z-Cap work together?

I am having one heck-of-a time trying to get a cap manufacturer to gaurantee that their cap will work with the bed extender.

Eagerly awaiting your info!!!!!!

When my cap was installed the co. installer put on shorter gas shocks and moved them out slightly. The bed extender works fine. The original shocks may have worked if just moved out slightly but with the shorter shocks the door just goes above the cap, not right up, which may save the door if backing into a garage with the back door up.

I will be able to post a reply tomorrow (Wed)--I have an appointment for install at 3pm. Once I return, I will reply with the results.

ARE assured me in an e-mail that it would work, but I have a sneaking suspicion that I may have clarance problems as I swing it up and out. I guess the proof will be actually doing it myself.

Dtrosch...

I hope your cap installation went well!

I really want to get my bed enclosed prior to the first real snowfall.

OK, here is the scoop. Short answer, no. There are clearance issues.

There are two "D" shaped brackets that the hatch uses as the latch close points. Its these that keep the bed extender from swinging out. Otherwse, it looks like it would clear with no problems.

I am going to look into possible relocation or re-engineering to make it fit. I am also going to contact ARE and tell them they are incorrect in their response, although I am sure there resonse will be to take it out and turn it around.

Although this would seem like a major inconvenience, I was not planning on leaving the bed extender in the truck unless on a Home Depot run. I plan on using the back to transport my dog, and the extender would be in the way much of the time. The extender will mostly reside in the garage.

I must say the ARE cap is very high quality. The inside slideing window matches up perfectly with the cab slider so it isn't noticeable from the driver's seat. The grey plastic bed rail caps are 90% covered by the skirt of the cap. THe 3rd brake light is recessed LEDs. The glass door looks nice, but the latch mechninsm needs to be studied because there is a trick to it. I haven't seen a cap that is as slick looking, including the SnugTop. The last 1/3 of the side windows "pop" out at the back edge, using a rotary dial ala the EXPY. There are screans behind them to keep the bugs out. I got it with the grey (platinum) headliner, and am pleased witht he fit.

I hope to borrow a digital camera from work tomorrow, and will try to post some picks this weekend. It's tough spending the time on the ocmputer since I have a 6 month old, and need to help the wife get things done. Feel free to post questions, and I'll try to respond. I check the board twice each day.

I have a cap made by Raider. The lower part of the bracket was moved closer to the cap edge to allow the extender to flip over.

dtrosch,

Really appreciate you being the guinea pig for this....I too have a yooung one at home (15 months) with a second on the way (due April)... hence the SuperCrew.

I actually talked to the cap manufacturers and most of them said stuff like "aw yea sure...no problem with those bed extenders done a million of 'em...no problems at all"

I am working with Glasstitie right now to see if their cab high cap will work.

Thanks heaps for the info and I look forward to the pics...especially the part where it interferes with the extender.

Cheers
