Question Milage Woo's

I now have about 2,500 miles on my Super Crew. I am averaging about 10.5 MPG wether I burn 87, 89 or 92 octane. Yes this is city milage with the air going but this is horrid. My Dodge had a larger engine, more go and about 5 MPG better under the same conditions. Gears are compareable. I have slightly O sized tires.

What are you guys getting around town? Will this improve with break in? Any helpfull suggestions? Yes I keep my foot out of it for all you wise *%$@sses out there.

I only have 900 miles on mine and I'm averaging around 13-15 mph around town with my 5.4L 4x4. Of course I drive like a grandma.

Wow, I found someone who actually gets worse mileage than me!
I get 11.3 city & 12.4 hwy. Even with the engine mods I did; I didn't get any mileage increase. No matter what octane I use, it's still the same.
I've read people get better #'s after the initial breakin. Probably not until after 5K before you see some better results.
I probably presume you have the 3.73 gears too. There are some people out there who break the 13 barrier with four wheel drive and 3.73+ gears. I guess they probably drive like old ladies too.
Heck, my father's 95 Dodge 3/4 ton V10 with 4.10 gears gets 11.7 city. You might want to try opening up the exhaust and getting a Superchip.

P.S. Go to the "Engines" forum and read some of the posts on Poweraid. I have one, and I didn't get NO performance gains out of it. So you might want to consider it.

Boy, am I glad I am not in your boat. 10.5 MPG? My absolute worst, and that was with a/c on all the time and all city driving was 13.7 MPG. I now have about 3300 miles on my 5.4L 4x4 SC. Highway MPG used to be around 15.3 until I added a Superchip. Now I get closer to 17 MPG on the highway. It's still not great, but, hey it's a truck.

Note: I did not buy a Superchip for mileage reasons, but, that does appear to be a side benefit; at least in highway driving. It made no difference in city driving MPG. It requires 92 octane

I see you have [much] larger than stock tires. Did you calculate your MPG from your odometer reading? If so, your figures will be wrong - assuming that you did not recalibrate your odometer/speedo. I will assume that you did not because I see that you dont list the superchip in your sig - and I havent heard of a Ford dealer that has successfully reprogrammed a 2001 computer (yet).

Question

riotrob

When I purchased the tires they looked up a chart and told me the milage dif would be insignifigant, Less than 1/25 dif. Did I get a line? Do I need to order a custom superchip to adjust for the tires?

Thanks for all the responces!

You guys make me feel special. I bought my SCREW with 2200 miles (dealership owner drove it) 2 weeks ago and my first two tanks (highway and city) were 17 and 17.5. I towed my 21 foot bass boat to a tournament and got 13.5 towing it with 50 gallons of gas and full tournament load in the boat.

What am I doing wrong?...hehehehe

When my S-crew with the 5.4 arrives, I'll sell my 1975 Pontiac Grandeville convertable with the 455 4 barrel. I get a whopping 8 MPG. The S-crew could double what I get now. So, the grass is always greener.......

So why in the world am I the only guy with 8900 miles in 3 months (dont tell Ford Motor Credit)???? I have kept tabs since day one. I drive 15 miles to work one way, the rest is weekend driving/taxi service for my pals, and one trip to vegas. I am averaging 15.3 mpg all around.
I have also started noticing that "piston slap" as well. It doesnt bother me though after reading the info from the f150 site and the related links. if you havent checked this stuff out and you have the 5.4, check it out. (sorry but i dont have the link handy)

Overall tire height is a BIG factor with gas mileage. Originally, my truck came with 245/75 R16 and changed to 265/70 R17. After the change my mileage went down .4 mpg. So with those 285's you're probably loosing about .5 to .8 mpg or maybe more if you only have 3.55 gears.

micp125,

I have the 7" round pencil beams. They work pretty good. But if I did it again, I would have bought the KC's. I can't tell the difference between the two. I have all four lights behind the grille.
As far as the Superchip correcting the speedo??? I not sure about that, I wouldn't understand how it could. You might want to give Mike T (Superchips) a shout on the "Computer Chips" forum.
To show your truck and options. Go to your "profile" and type whatever in "signature." And when you post a topic or reply to one, make sure you click "Show Signature."

P.S. If you're interested in lights. Go to www.carparts.com
Click "coupon" and enter #1865008. 1/3 Off. You can get some killer deals on PIAA's, KC'c, Hella's, etc.

Unhappy

I'M SOOOO CONFUSED. WHEN I ORDERED MY SCREW, 17" WHEELS WERE STANDARD AND 16" WERE OPTIONED. AVAIL.GEAR RATIO WAS 3.55 ONLY. AND U HAVE 16" WHEELS? GEAR RATIO 3.73?
ANYWAY, I HAVE AVERAGED 15 MPG SINCE FIRST TANK.HAVE 5200 MILES NOW. I ONLY RUN 93 OCTANE, PREFER CITGO GAS, GET BETTER PERFORMANCE FROM THEIR FUEL MIXTURE. AND JUST INSTALLED S-CHIP. POWER CHANGE IS DRAMATIC AND MPG IS SAME OR A TOUCH MORE IF I CAN KEEP OUT OF THE THROTTLE!
