Why is the supercrew SO expensive?
I was considering the purchase of a SC, as I now have a '97 F-150 EC, 4x4. However, comparing a new EC to a SC, I was shocked that the SC was a LOT more expensive. I don't see where all the extra cost is coming from. It seems to me that Ford has priced it really high, since there is no competiton.

I looked on Kelley Blue Book and found the following:
F150 SUPER CAB 4WD 139" W.B.
Base Invoice: $27439.00
Base MSRP: $30080.00
F150 SUPERCREW CAB 4WD 139" W.B.
Base Invoice: $28105.00
Base MSRP: $31865.00
This is only a difference of $666 invoice and $1785 MSRP. Considering you get four "real" doors in the SuperCrew I don't think it the price of the SuperCrew is set too high.

Were you comparing XLT to XLT (or Lariot to Lariot)? How about 2001 to 2001?
Dont compare the '01 Screw base price to an '00 Supercab base price. Ford doesnt make a stripped down Screw (no work or XL models available). They come pretty well loaded - and '01 XLTs/Lariots have more standard options than the XLT/Lariots from the '00 model year.
The Screw offers A LOT MORE than the supercab. Your getting two extra [full] doors and an actual back seat (not like the toy seat in the supercab). Basically, your getting the interior cab of an Expy with a flairside bed attached.
Compared to a loaded supercab or a loaded Expy, the Screw is a great buy.

Here's what I came up with at Edmund's, supporting the question.
F-150 EC 4x4, XLT
Invoice 22523 MSRP 25950
F-150 SC 4x4, XLT
Invoice 25949 MSRP 29470
I went to KBB, and their prices match the SC prices above exactly, while the EC prices they list are slightly higher, but not much. I was looking at a 2000 model on edmunds, and a 2001 on kbb, which probably accounts for the slight difference in price on the EC. So, on invoice, there's at least a $2500 difference.

I guess my point is, lets say I take an EC door and add whatever it takes to make it wider. Same for the rear seat. You think there's $2,500 more worth of materials and markup there. The material costs would be close to negligible, except the window mechanism in the door.
I'm kinda glad my '97 is such low mileage (37k). I'll wait for some competition from the other guys, and then Ford will have to compete.
It's a tought choice for me and probably many others, to get the extra interior space for the cargo area. I just hauled some 12' sheetrock in my truck, which wasn't that cool since it stuck out 4'. The SC would be really bad. (as an example)
For you that own these, this is not a flame in any way. I'm a Ford guy all the way, never owned anything but Ford.

I dont believe Edmunds has the price comparison available for the 2000 and one "Supercab". They dont make those models yet. Newer model- newer price. I dont think you can compare a 2000 price to the 2001 like riotrob stated.
I can imagine there will be a slight difference in cost when the 2001 supercab price comes out, but not as large a difference as they are currently. New truck, high demand, higher prices. Plus alot of dealers are marking those supercabs down to unbelievable prices. I have seen more 2000 XLT and Lariat SuperCABS on the road than older models!!! Now is a good time to buy a supercab if you can stand not having a larger back seat.

Ok, here ya go:
2000 Supercab XLT
4-spd automatic trans - OPTIONAL
electronic shift transfer case - OPTIONAL
carpeted floor mats - OPTIONAL
power adjustable pedals - OPTIONAL
CD premimum sound system - OPTIONAL
remote keyless entry - OPTIONAL
3.55 (non LS) axle ratio - OPTIONAL
leather wrapped steering wheel - OPTIONAL
4 wheel anti-lock disc brakes - OPTIONAL (?)
All standard on the Screw. Add to the above; power rear windows (tinted), power rear door locks, a full 60/40 bench seat (with fold down armrest and cup holders) in the rear, map lights and grab handles for the rear passengers, carpeted rear floor mats.
Other manufacturing costs would come from the extra amount of steel, paint, interior trim, and carpet required for the extended interior.
And there is a whole lot more to the bigger doors and seat than just a few extra bucks.

Obviously, I did a bad job on my homework. I assumed (really bad assumption) that the equipment would be about the same. The auto transmission makes a lot of the difference, plus all the other smaller items add up. The SC is probably still a bit more expensive, but not by much. There are a few standard items on the SC that I wouldn't pay for as an option on an EC, so I could save a little there, but it's not going to be that much.
Thanks for setting me straight.
Thanks for setting me straight.
Including all of the other options mention that are standard on the supercrew, It's also considered (albeit somewhat modified) a flareside bed, which add at least a grand to the cost over a standard styleside. There's no extra charge for all of the stares you get either!!
I think that most things today are overpriced. However, I believe the supercrew is a good deal for the money. A chevy z-71 is alot more $ and less of a truck in my opinion. I have had my supercrew for only a week now and have been very, very happy with it.
