01' Lariat vs. 06' Lariat

I am considering an 01' Lariat vs. an 06' Lariat. It will be a daily driver as well as work truck (I own rental property) and cost is an issue. The 01' has 67k miles with the balance of the factory warranty for $12k. I would hope to get it for about $9k. The 06' has 70k miles, is Ford certified and is listed for $18k. I would hope to get it for about $15k. I am looking for feedback between the 01' and the 06', e.g. problems, maintenance, etc. There is a substantial cost difference and there is a substantial warranty difference since the Ford certified 06' will have 30k more miles before the warranty runs out. I don't know how much is left of the original factory warranty on the 01'. Thanks in advance.

i would get the 01, just because the 06 is overprice. you can get a new truck for 18k easily with a full warranty and brand new

i would look around a bit more. I just bought a used 2005 f150 lariat supercrew from a dealership with like 36K miles on it for $16,200. Bought a 2 year extended warranty on it. Truck was perfect condition.

I changed from the 01 to the 05 and instantly noticed the difference. More comfortable ride, better acceleration etc

Go with the 06 and offer them $13,000. Send and email and ask for internet sales. You can get an F-150 for $18k, but you won't get a Lariat for that. The 06 is going to get better gas mileage and climate control. That 70k on an 06 is better than 67k on an 01 because that is 20 - 30k a year compared to 8 - 9k a year.

I'd go with the 01. The engine and tranny will last 200K easy, if you take care of them, besides it's a work truck. Throw a set of bilsteins on it and you're golden. U saved yourself a bunch of money and have a great truck to show for it. Lariats are nice and confortable. Maintenance on the 97-03s is pretty easy also...IMO

This has to be the understatement of the year.

No throttle by wire, easier access to work on items like the RAP and GEM, and easier to change fuses on.

Tons of threads on issues here in the engines and electrical sections, I would say an easy 10X on what is available for the '04+ ( due to years being on the road ).

down sides : Check the floor by the cab fuse panel for signs of water, this was an issue on some ( read SOME, not lot ), with the windshield not sealed correctly.
The plug issues ( if you read that ) is about the same PITA on both. The '01 is easier to put a helicoil into if needed ( and that is a BIG if ).

The IAC in the '01 is dirt easy to clean, and even easier to replace if needed ( 2 bolts ), the '04+ uses the throttle by wire for the idle circuit in the truck.

Front suspension on the '01 is really a suspension, the '04+ it is almost like struts up front.

My dad has my old '01 SCrew ( XLT ) for a work truck, and he loves it.

Not saying I don't like my '06, but for a work truck, and cost to millage considerations on what you are looking at, I would do the '01 in this case.

Good luck either way

I dont know if you'll get the 06 for 15K but 17 is possible. MAybe even 16.5K. You cannot get a new LAriat for anywhere near 18K. I have had an 01 and now an 05 screw. Both great trucks. If you plan on towing the new style is far better. It is also much quieter and does get a bit better mpg for me. The 01 was a good truck for me though. It would be 7 years old by now and things will start going wrong. But if you are not travelling long distances, not an issue as reapirs will be cheapo and parts plentiful. You're likely to get a better deal on the '01.

That has always been the case up until this year. A base Lariat has an MSRP of 32k. You don't see many Lariats more than $42k. We have heard of dealer's offering up to $15k off of new 08s remaining on the lot, but $12k is more common. That would mean a range of $17k - $30k for a new Lariat.

What adds strength to your statement is the probability of finding an 08 Lariat in inventory this late in the season. With these discounts I don't think you will find even one Lariat in the whole lower 48 states.

Even though this particular Lariat is only three years old, it does have 70,000 miles on it. Those miles are going to cost the original owner some money, and reduce the resale value.

Thanks to all for the responses and things to be considered. Iowa, what is your response, as quoted (pertaining to traveling long distances), in reference to? Are you referring to mpg issues, ride characteristics, breaking down on the road, etc.? Because I would, occassionally, be taking to the open road. Thanks again, in advance.

Don't know where all those plentiful parts are. Around here the junk yards are practically barren due to the high prices steel was bringing. A 6000 lb truck brought more for scrap than sitting on it and selling parts.

If you have the extra funds for the '06, definitely go for that one! Much better truck.
