Gas Mileage

Just got back from a weekend trip to San Antonio and I am happy with the gas mileage I got. On the way over, I got 20 MPG. That was nothing but highway miles as I filled up when I got there. After some city driving and then back home, I got 18 MPG. Gas is pretty cheap there. I filled up for $2.69/gal. And that was at a major station not at a no-name station.

What speed were you cruising at?

I didn't do as well on my last trip. I had two bikes on the back catching wind, and I was late so I was running 74 most of the time. I got 17 MPG.

I've got the 4.6 and it's all stock. I was traveling at 70-72 MPH. I also have a LoRider cover which I think helped. I usually get 15.5-16.5 mpg normal driving around town.

I can get over 18mpg if I cruise at 67mph @1750rpms. Seem's to be the optimum spot for my truck. Not bad for a heavy 4x4 Screw on 35's.

I live in the Houston-Galveston area and we have to use that reformulated gas that's not very good for gas mileage or power. While in San Antonio, I filled up with the "normal" gas. I did a lot of city driving while there that's why the mileage went down some.

As e10 expands around the country gas mileage will decrease for everyone.

San Angelo Texas...
'02, F150 Supercrew FX4wd, 5.4L, auto trans, 90K miles, bed cover, BFG All-terrain KO's (otherwise stock)

Trying to improve mpg from 13 mpg - about 2 months ago, I put a K&N intake, and aeroturbine exhaust on in July. Also changed spark plugs after reading tips on this forum and many prayers. The mpg improved only about 0.5 mpg. Most of my driving is on the highway and honestly between 63 and 73. I've noticed improved horspower - but find that the shifting seems to be overreving before going to the next gear. It seems to be out of sync. I asked a "Ford Truck Guy" at the local parts house about it and he said I might need to use a tuner to readjust the onboard computer. Before I spend anymore $$ to save $$ I'd really like to know if this will work. The same guy told me doing what I did would get me closer to 20 mpg - so I'm really not convinced this isn't a load of you know what. Anybody out there have any advice or experience to share?

Gas Mileage

I have a 2002 FX4 with the 5.4. It has a three inch body lift, torsion bas adjusted, and running on 35's. I have flowmasters, and that's about it. I get 12mpg on the freeway.? I tried the k&n route, it does nothing. Any suggestions???

20mpg seems a little low for a 4.6. I can get about 19 Hwy at 70-73mph with my 5.4.

Ya, a tonneau cover of some sort. I have a Screw 4x4 with the 5.4 and installed a K&N filter (no intake), soft tonneau cover, and Magnaflow dual exhaust. Went from 13 city to 16 city.

I have a Super Crew and have to fill up with that formulated gas as I suspect you have over there in California also. Is your truck all stock? As for getting 20 MPG on the hwy, I'm real happy to get that.

if your getting worse gas mileage than me and paw paw with our 35's something is wrong. get a programmer, exhaust, intake and you should see a few mpg increase.
