Front end noise

Hey folks. I have an 05 FX4 Screw. Yesterday it started making an odd noise while driving. Almost sounds like the wings of a dragon-fly (flapping) as the tires are rolling. This happens at highway speeds and even when I am barley moving down the neighborhood (with my head out the window trying to figure out where it's coming from).
Could this be similiar to the ole' "tattle tales" on the brakes?

Any ideas?

Pull the wheel and check for any trash in the brake caliper. Also check for a bad wheel bearing- if you shake the wheel and see the brake rotor have extra play with the wheel thats a sign of a bad bearing

Once I had a big screw in the tire and as I drove down the road it make a ticking sound and as I drove faster the ticking would increase too.

Thanks for the feedback. I pulled off the tires and inspected the rotors...nothing unusual there. However, after looking underneath the truck, I'm thinking it may be a bad u-joint.

Well..it wasn't the u-joints!

The same noise came back this weekend while driving home from NC. This time however, the truck felt like it had a flat tire (a vibration) and also wasn't shifting into gear. There was no flat and the tranny was good. After driving about 50 or so miles..it seemed to "shift" and all was normal again.

Then it started again after a quick fuel stop. This time I switched it into 4-hi and the noise went away. So now I know that somehow the 4x4 is trying to engage or disengae. I am baffled on this. I'm thinking the the 4x4 switch (or an electrical problem) is causing the truck to try and engage into 4 wheel drive.

Any ideas??

Just climbed underneath the truck. Spun the front drive shaft..which caused the right front hub to spin. While doing this, it made the clicking sound.

Does this mean the hub is probably shot?

Just got it back from the dealer. The solenoid caused damage to both 4wd actuators and also the right front bearing.

So glad I purchased the ESP!
