Oil changing

The cost of an oil change at my dealership runs around $47.00. I am considering going back to doing it myself . You guys think I would have have any warranty problems on a 2006 S'crew if something should come up?

No, just use a motorcraft oil filter when you change the oil. I have heard that it might be a problem if something goes wrong with the engine internaly and you have a different brand filter.

I use 5w-20 motorcraft semi-synthetic oil and the stock replacement motorcraft oil filter.

The Motorcraft FL-820S oil filter has great filtering capacity and flow rates. The Motorcraft 5W20 oil is a synthetic blend for about $2/qt, a great value. There is little reason to use anything else for most people.

Keep our receipts for any service, either paid or parts you did yourself if you are concerned. BTW, every oil change place I've been to offers 5W20 and I've paid between $20 and $30. Dealer @ $47 is not worth it.

$47 sounds more reasonable if that includes everything recomended in the service schedule (lubing stuff, checking things, etc.)

Are you sure their just changing the oil? My dealer charges around $25 for just an oil change and around $45 for and oil change and tire rotation.

My dealer charges $28.50 for an oil change and I usually have a coupon to get it done for $18.

My dealer sends me oil change coupons---$19.95(5 qts oil & filter). Of course I have a 5.4,so I have to buy 2 quarts of oil.

Most dealers I've been to charge $18 to $21 for an oil change, and $40 to $45 for oil change and tire rotation.

If I can't stop by a dealer, I just change my own oil. You won't void your warranty using non-Motorcraft oil & filter.

When I had my Ranger's engine worked on under warranty, the subject of oil & filter never came up.

Generally most vehicle warranty programs allow an owner to do their own maintenance on a car/truck provided that you are not knowingly doing something that will be harmful to the running/performance of that vehicle.

So changing your oil is pretty much a moot issue on warranty.

I just got my first oil change (2538 miles) done at the dealership and it was $19.95. That was for a Lube, Oil, and Filter with 53 pt. inspection.

What I used to do was to let the dealer perform the oil changes while under warranty. With my receipts, this was proof enough that my truck was dealer serviced. I also used the coupons and took advantage of the (sometimes) free coffee and doughnuts (I know - dealer overhead, etc.)

Once I was out of warranty, I simply started to change the oil myself.

Walmart does have some great prices however...

With the dealer oil changes being so cheap, I seldom bother changing the oil myself anymore. Seven qts of oil + filter for my 5.4L's costs about as much as the dealer asks for an oil change. Though, I do prefer to run Castrol GTX in my vehicles than the dealer's Valvoline.

Oil Changes

Thanks for all the input! I kinda figured that $47.00 was high for the service that I am getting. That's what the dealer also charges for servicing our car for an oil change.

From the invoice

1) QC maintenance " multi point inspection" 17.55

2) 1 FL820 S oil filter 8.14

3) 7 CXO 5w20 BSP1 15.26

4) Environmental Disposal 1.00

total 41.95

TAXES ( Canada EH!) 5.88

total 47.83
