2001 Screw shopping

Hello all, I found a 2001 Screw 4x4 with 63,000 miles for $13500. It's a pretty plain jane crew, no heated seats, no sunroof, steel wheels, it does have the 5.4L engine, and room for 6, which is mainly what I'm looking for. Is that a good deal, or do I have room to talk them down a little? Is that mileage decent for the year? I guess that would be about 15-16,000/yr, a little higher than average.

Also, it looks like it sits a little lower that some of the other crews out there, compared to the FX4's and/or ones with the offroad package. Is there any difference in the suspension? My plans would be to add a 3" body lift, and larger wheels and tires.

Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you!
Pat

That's probably not a bad price - but it's kinda always been my idea that if they're offering one price, they'll probably take another. I probably wouldn't shoot them too much lower, but give it a shot. It probably really depends on how much you want this particular truck. I had a hard time finding one in NE in my price range, and it didn't have all the bells and whistles - but that was a year ago. I've found that most of the mods you might want are easy to get, usually pretty cheap (ebay, classifieds, whatever) for that year of truck. Check the usual places (edmunds, kelly blue book, etc.) and do your homework, and tell us how it comes out! Good luck! You're gonna love having one - I have a family of 5, and we fit comfortably, carseats and all!

Oh yeah - the milage seems about right for that year of truck. I bought mine with much higher miles, and I haven't had any problems at all. It really depends on how well they've been taken care of. Do a search on milage - there are plenty of guys getting 200K plus out of these trucks!

I bought my 2001 Supercrew, 4X4, 5.4L, Lariat, leather, K&N FIPK, Gibson Exhaust, Extang Tonneau, 76,000 miles.........$13,000.

So you might have a little bit of room to haggle......maybe drop the price about $1000 or so to $12,500.

I traded my 01 Screw 52k mi, 4x2, no bells or whistles and with an A.R.E. Tonneau cover, 4.6L and in mint condition. for $13.5 (Dealer trade in), (bought an 05 with all the bells, etc..)
I'd say $13.5 for a 4x4 5.4L is a good price and the milage is good.

Two recalls on the 2001 that I remember were with the driver side seatbelt, dealer will fix, check to see if that was done, and the cruise controll (reports that they were catching on fire even when the car was parked and off)
When i lived in Texas, one person in the town i lived caught fire and took down his garage. The temp solution was to disconnect.

The 01 was a great truck, you will be happy with it.

The third generation Supercrew has headrests in the backseat and the headrest is seperate from the bucket seats in the front. They also have a wider front console with no armrests on the Captains Chairs. Not sure exactly when they changed all of this stuff. I have a 2003 Lariat FX4 Supercrew and have nearly 70,000 miles on it. It has never been to the shop except for routine maintenance and the drivetrain has the added stress of 35" tires. In my opinion, all Supercrews are very solid trucks. I would recommend a Supercrew to anyone and I think that is definately a good buy you are looking at. Try to talk him down a little though, becuase if he really wants to sell, he will negotiate. Just my 2 cents.

I can't figure out how to insert a picture on here. I think you said you were considering modding the truck a little with some larger tires and a lift kit. I was gonna let you see what I have accomplished so far. Go to this page and check it out.

Hope you make the right decision and get a Supercrew! Let us know the outcome and goodluck talking him down!

Like it says in that link, Gen III is basically the same as 2002, which would be a newer and more comfortable truck than a Gen I or II, hence a better deal

Why not drive to Denver and look at the dealerships. Each dealership must have five or six Screws for sale at bargain prices. You could get a loaded Lariat for the price you are quoting. Phil Long Ford; Courtesy Ford; and Burt Ford are good bets. Phil Long is where I got mine - two years ago I paid $13500 diff and got a 2001 Gen III with 25000 miles on it. My trade was a 1998 S-10 ZR2 4X4. Good Luck in your search.

Seeing that the Supercrews first appeared in 2001, only the earliest models are not Gen 3. I have one I bought new in May 2001 and it's a Gen 3. There are very few of them that aren't Gen 3.

** UMMMM, no, the Gen I came out in early 2000, *listed as a 2001*. My Gen I was built in 4/2000 and delivered 6/2000. I ordered mine through a military web hence being allowed first orders. I will say that the Gen I was a PIA with the front end issues. ( these were susequently solved with year 2002 although FORD won't admit an issue existed.) I traded that POS in on a 2002 afetr several dealer repairs, FORD engineer test drives ( useless SOB's) and many lemon law threats. GEN III 2001's were much bettter that either I or II models. Just ask FORD...
