I will say that the Gen I was a PIA with the front end issues. ( these were susequently solved with year 2002 although FORD won't admit an issue existed.) I traded that POS in on a 2002 afetr several dealer repairs, FORD engineer test drives ( useless SOB's) and many lemon law threats. GEN III 2001's were much bettter that either I or II models. Just ask FORD...
Semantics. Model year 2001 is what I meant. That doesn't change the fact that only a very small number are not Gen 3. I've never even heard of a Gen 2.

Can you be more specific about the front end problems with the Gen I screws?
Mine was built 6/00 and I've had nothing but steering problems since new.

Thanks

Is this height difference compared to other ’01’s?
Was your 01 was sitting next to a newer model and appeared shorter?
If so, the newer models have freakishly high bed walls.
My 01 parked next to a friends 05 (stock to stock) is actually taller at the roofline.
But his bed walls are taller.
Good luck, and it sounds like they pricd that 01 to move.
Carfax it, for piece of mind.

Mine was built 6/00 as well and I do not have any front end problems. I will say however that the tie-rods are cheap junk and that is what I would replace first followed by ball joints. I am going to do mine in the spring. I have about 85K on stock parts. I would also replace your shocks if you still have stock ones. The stockers are good for about 30K. I replaced mine with over 50K and they were completely bad, I could compress them by hand and they stayed compressed for a long time. One of them never returned to starting position. I have Bilsteins now.

Tie Rod ends and shocks will help steering issues as will ball joints.

60k isnt bad at all. My S'crew has 165,000 miles, and the only problem with her is a blown spartplug (No damage, but a issue with the engine I guess). Just change the oil, and it will run smoothly.

Just bought my 2001 supercrew, 5.4L, loaded, Gen III about a month ago. I totally love the truck! It has only 46,000 and it spotless inside and out. I paid $16,500. I figure this truck I will have for a long time!

As much as I can recall from back then.

Gen I 01/00 - 08/00
Plastic steering wheel. solid head rest

Gen II 09/00 - 12/00
Leather steering wheel, solid head rest

Gen III 01/01 - 12/03
Leather steering wheel, adjustable head rest
new rear window seal for 02

I have a Gen II. I had the rear window seal replaced in 02 with the new seal, and the idler arm and lower ball jounts replaced to fix a tire wear problem.
