Tire OWL Inside or Out
To me, it's always white letters/whitewalls out (I'm a classic car guy, so that probably has an impact...). Dresses it up. Unless you're going for the budget/work truck/rat rod look, then having blackwalls is a-ok.
The dealer I bought my truck from put some brand new 31x10.5/15 tires on with the RWL on the inside and it's driving me nuts. I think I'm going to have a tire shop turn em around so the good stuff points out.

Some tires are asymetric and are not made to be mounted backward. Look at the BFG Longtrail tires that come on the KR's. They are marked, Mount this side out. If you check the tread. It is different from one side to the other.
I asked my tire warehouse, not a dealer, I'm the dealer, about this. He said BFG won't warranty if on backward and that the tire is marked that way for a reason. And the reason isn't to advertise their name.
I prefer no white letters on modern cars also. But on the KR I'll put up with them.

gearhead that doesn't make sense.
that same tire can be mounted on the opposite side of the vehicle and rotate in the same direction but your sidewalls will be either OWL or black.
your dealer is blowing smoke. i have yet to see a tire marked left side and right side???? am i missing something here?

The tires come standard on my KR Supercrew. And as "desparado" stated it has nothing to do with the rotation of the tire. As I said it is the "
tread design." It is different from inside to outside as you look at the tires tread.
There are tires out there with rotation markings, usually some kind of an Arrow pointing in the direction of rotation. This is not that.
I have owned two King Ranch Supercrews. Both 2WD. Both came equiped with BFG OWL tires. The 01 had 17 inch wheel the 05 has 18 inch wheel. Same tires came from Ford on trucks and I replace the 01's before trading it in. The were all BFG Long Trail T/A tires. The all have on the sidewall, in black box letters, "Mount this side out". The wording is located just above the white letters "BF Goodrich".
Also, if you look at the tread it has a different design on the outer 25 % of the tread from inside to outside.
Maybe you guys should go physically look at the tire.
My shop, yes I own and operate an auto/tk repair shop, works on many trucks. This tire is on many new trucks from Ford and GM. As the day of repairing customers trucks goes on we tend to see "all types of tires" and these BFG's are popular. We also sell, mount and balance quite a few new tires too.

The issue isn't which side of the truck the tires are on.
It's which way the tire is rotating when the vehicle is moving forward. Directional tires should only roll a certain way when the vehicle is moving forward. These tires will have an arrow on the sidewall indicating which way they should rotate.

gearhead, i know what you are saying now. we have an 06 dodge pickup here at work which has the Goodyear wrangler. it does have a different tread pattern on the outside compared to the inside. thanks for the info.
by the way i prefer white letters out but that may be because i'm an old muscle car fan. i think it looks a lot sportier. 2 each his own.

Put new Firestone Destination A/T 's last fall...(947.60 if I remember the cost with tax and balance)The tire guys put the letters facing out...Looked good that day but...Can never keep them clean looking and I wish now I had put them facing in...The large tire size does make a difference ... mine are 265/70/17...
Have to say they are the best tires I have had...They do everything great in all weather...

I did OWL out and like it. Also.........
Here are some thoughts on the P Series or LT Series tires in the AT Revo. I got the P265/70R 17s in the AT Revo after much agonizing. The LT series buys you two things...a harder ride and beefier side walls.
I was concerned that the Ps might not be stiff enough on conrnering with these heavy trucks. NO Problem at all. I am really pleased that I got the P series tires. I also called tirerack.com and 1010tires.com. They both recommended the Ps over the LTs. So did the local Firestone dealer.
As far as weight rating goes......Per APT's post in the reference thread below
"The P-rated Revo is rated for 2535 lbs each, or 5070 over the rear axle. That's well beyond your rear springs rating. "
It is also a higher rating than the LT tires they replaced. Those were Goodyear ATS LT 26570R 17s rated at 2470. So it is only side wall protection in the LTs. How many side walls have you punched thru in your life from rocks or sticks? None in my life (and I have a spare) so I went for the Ps for a pleasurable and very quiet ride everyday. If you have punched thru side walls do to your use of your truck or if you carry REALLY heavy loads frequently then maybe the LTs are for you.
One more thing. Bridgestone allows you to drive on these tires for 30 days and if you are not happy with them you can return them. At this point you could upgrade to the LTs. Ask about this garauntee when you buy them.
Good input from this group of helpful folks here.
