2001 supercrew

Im looking at upgrading my 97 f150 xtra cab 4x4 for a super crew, I found a 2001 at a local dealer. Its a lariat with only 8500 miles on it, this seems to be extremely low for a 5 yr. old truck but it looks brand new. Should there be anything specific i should be looking at . Ive been told to stay away from a truck that old with such low mileage , they say little use is worse then alot of use. Any help would be appriciated. There asking $21900.

And people think my 01 with 42000 is low milage! Sounds like a great find to me. Is it a 4x2 or 4x4?

not bad but why spend that much money on an 01? you can find an 03 or 04 for that. i just bought an 02 lariet screw 4x2 with 60k for $13,900 so what ever floats your boat. i just think its a little high price and low mileage something don't seam right. good luck in your search. thanks mike

We just bought a 2003 Supercrew 2wd with 80,000 miles on it and we love it. It was advertised for 13,995 and we ended up trading my wifes 2002 buick regal for 5500 difference. We test drove it once and when we came back to the lot I asked the guy what his best offer was. Of course he had to go back inside to do some figuring. I jokingly told my wife that if they would trade us for 4500 difference I'd do it. She gave me a dirty look. She wasn't as interested as I was. The truck wasn't washed recently, the tires were oversized and shot, very loud going down the road, and the bed was pretty rough. She just could not see the potential I could. Anyway he came out and said 6000 difference. I said no way and we started to leave. Then he says what will it take to make you drive it home. My wife said that if they would take another 1500 off the difference we would take it. So we went back and forth and finally agreed on 5500 difference if they put on a new set of tires and put a bedliner. We drove it home that night and we only had a photocopy of all the papers, someone had lost the title to the truck and they had to get a new one. I went back up a week later and they did all the work on it and a whole lot more. They put on new tires, installed a bedliner, put new brake shoes all the way around, replaced an idler arm and some other front end parts, aligned it, inspected it, changed the wipers and the oil. With the oversized tires we were getting around 14 mpg and now it is 15 to 16. We absolutely love it. It is very comfortable and quiet to ride in. The paint and interior looks brand new and the engine is solid and doesn't seem to use any oil. My wife seems a lot more relieved now.

Keep in mind also, an 01 is the same as the 02's and 03's. The price does sound high, but it's because it is a nice (I assume) low milage truck. If you have shopped for used vehicles lately, you know it is hard to find something with low miles. My 01 has 42,000 miles on it and I know there is no way I would trade it for a used vehicle. I've bought used vehicles in the past and from my experience it is hard to find a used 4x4 truck that has not been beat to death.

I just picked up my 02 F150 Screw 4x4 lariat w/dvd and all options. Original window sticker in the glove box shows $35k msrp. It has 64k miles on it and is in perfect like new shape, including the leather. I got it for $18k plus they are putting a set of new Nitto Teragrapplers on it.

The local Ford dealer told me used F-150's are hard to come by at the moment, especially loaded ones. So, the dealers tend to ask full KBB retail on their used trucks.

A used truck with ultra low miles is a GOOD thing in my book! If one thinks a used truck with 80,000 miles is gonna be better than one with 8000, they're nuts.

The truck sounds good, and they have it priced at the high end of blue book. Due to the age and its effect on the future value of the truck, I would try to get them down to $18K.

Keep in mind there are some subtle differences in the 01's and 02+. The main one in my mind is the electronic climate control. I would have waited for the 02's if I had known they would have had that. That seems suspiciously low on mileage. Sounds like the instrument cluster was changed without setting it to the same the computer says.

I am willing to bet it has to be done at the dealer. I don't have any experience with it, but I have heard that if you replace your instrument cluster you have to send in your mileage in order to get it set to what the true computer mileage is. Not sure why that is. I would think the computer would flash the odometer automatically.

I'm a big supporter of staying away from anything 5 years old with that low of miles. Repairs will be high due to lack of use, and it will never experience a long life in miles. The real down side it the high price due to low miles. I much prefer a one year old vehicle with high miles. There is little extra wear driving a warm vehicle, but the price drips due to high miles.

If that engine was not warmed up on a regular basis due to short trips, then there was water, acid, and fuel sitting in the engine oil sump most of the time. With two possible oil changes in the past 5 years, the oil will sludge up and it's all down hill from there. It runs hot, with poor compression, the valves suffer, the trans does not cool as well...

Why?

No problems with my 01 Gen 1. The differences are minor. No headrests on rear seats, Armrests on captains chairs, minor issues.

82K miles and still loving it!

it had a stainless brush guard, nerf bars, and brand new husky floor liners in it.
