Gas mileage killin' me... save my Crew !
Guys,
I have an '05 Supercrew bought new in June, now with 5900 miles (my daily driver; highway hauler). I bought a tonneau cover for it and I had the dealer do the repair to the sluggish throttle lag/response. Previously, the best I could do was 17 mpg on the hwy doing 75mph (using cruise control); now I can get 19 mpg at the same speed.
I also found out that driving 60 mph will fetch me slightly more than 22 mpg.
These are trucks; they suck down the gas and in return they offer room, payload and towing capacities other vehicles cannot offer. If your concern is fuel economy, trucks are not the vehicles you need to be driving. Of course, everyone is feeling the pain of the hole left in their wallet from high gas prices. That is reality. If I was able to comfortable fit in a VW Jetta diesel, I would use that car as my daily driver...50mpg on the hwy...not bad at all.

I never complain about gas prices or mileage. Not because I don't have strong feelings about them. I truly do, but I have even stronger feelings about driving what I want, how I want, and consuming as much gas as I want. If I never complain, then it does not become an issue to other "tree hunging" people. I can can simply tell them to mind their own @#$%^^ business, because I sure there is something in their life that I do not approve of. I am assuming that everyone that bought a truck knew the type of gas mileage they could expect. It was printed right on the window sticker in most cases or available from hundreds of other sources. So IMO we can pay and move on, pay and complain and let others complain about us, or just trade off what you love and get a bike. This is of course only my opinion, I could be wrong.LOL
Me I got a motorbie...
I get 40-45 mpg at 80-90 mph. Can't beat it. Use the truck in rain/snow and hauling. She only gets 5-8K miles per year if she's lucky. Cycle get 10-15K per year. Big time gas savings.

Just traded in my 02 screw for an 05 screw this past weekend...the 02 was getting 10-12 mpg. The new one has the info center...it is indicating 10.7 mpg unloaded...just towed our company trailer today, info center indicated 10.5 mpg. This seems a bit odd?
Regards!

Drivin an 02 Screw with the 5.4 and a 4X4. Around town my last check showed about 13.6 and the last road trip was 17.8 mpg. Course I'm in my 50's and have overcome the urge to be the first one anywhere.
Much better than my last ride (99 F-250 SD with the V-10). That one was 11.1 round town and about 13 on a road trip.

Testing complete.
I found the best way to save on fuel mileage is to SLOW DOWN. I ran normally (using the passing gear and what not) and was getting 10 mpg. With easy start/stops and keeping the tach under 2000 rpm, I got 15 mpg. This is on a 2001 F150 Supercrew King Ranch 4x4, 5.4 V8 w/ 3.55 LS rear end and no modifications. Guess I won't be getting in a hurry until those gas prices get back down to $1.50!
Yeah, right...

Yeah, right...
How can you get that kind of gas mileage. I took my F150 Crew 4X4 to the Coast from Austin and to the Penny ....on the Highway only got 15.539 miles to the gallon.
I took my truck to the Dealer complain,....all the did was reset the chip. I'm happy for you.

I have an 03 Eddie Bauer Expedition 5.4L 4x4 with 22" wheels, K&N air filter and custom exhaust from Banks and I am lucky to get 13 MPH, usually around 12, and my driving is 50/50 town and freeway driving - no lead foot unless going around a moron on the freeway. I live in So Cal. - San Diego and gas is $2.97 +_ for regular, close to $75.00 a fill, talk about pain. Plus my wife drives an 04 Explorer, got to protect the little ones.
Anyway, I recently Superchipped my truck with the 87 Octane option and saw a little improvement. I had been trying for a few months now to keep the foot out of it and it had given me about 1 to 2 MPH more. I recently filled up with 91 Octane, $3.09 with the performance Superchip tuner program to see if there is any better gas mileage than running the 87 Octane program.
Anyone else experimented to see if the Superchips 91 Octane programs give you better gas mileage than the 87 octane progam? And if so, is it good enough to off set the $6.00 more a fill up for the 91 octane?

Add-ons
I have an '05 Screw FX4 5.4L V8 True Blue. The sticker advertised 14/18. I bought it fully knowing that I was going to get raped at the gas pump. I was getting in that general area, and then I added a K&N intake system, a Gibson cat-back exhaust, and just got the hypertech programmer today. The jury's still out for another week or so on the improved fuel economy, but it sure is faster and as long as the improved performance doesn't tempt you to slam the gas pedal, there should be significant improvements. I highly reccommend at least the air intake and exhaust. It's too much fun to drive to worry about gas, in my book.
