Price of gas in Toronto, Ontario, Canada is running 94 cents a litre. But if you shop around you can get it for 10 cents less a litre. Some market research company here suggests that you fill your vehicle late at night, because the gas stations fight each other over price during the day, and the prices drops over the course of the day.

Way back in early 2001, I discovered that if I could keep my truck below 1800 rpm, or lower, that I could get over 20 mpg. I consistently average between 14 winter, and 19 - 20 summer with my truck. Canadian figures.

As has been mentioned in the other threads, a lead foot hurts in the long run.
I have a cap on my truck, and it gave me a 3 mpg mileage boast. Aerodynamics improve with either a box or bed cover.

Good luck

You know I've thought about buying a bed cover. I'm not very partial to caps so it would need to be lightweight flush mount. Good suggestion

I forgot to add...my truck got about 13 in town and 17 hwy when it was new. This last tank at 10 kind of hurts...

My truck is bone stock except for the K&N filter. I just cleaned that a month ago. New plugs might help a little since I'm at 50k. I used to change the plugs in my 4-runner every 30k. This I could do myself in about 30 minutes, but this Ford beast, I can't even find the plugs to change them. Not to mention the problems and time it takes to change them in these Fords.

I even stayed with the same size tires when I replaced them cause I was worried about affecting the mileage.

Maybe I need the Turbonator!

Good luck! If anyone has any suggestions please post!

I guess I should consider myself lucky then. I thought mine was bad at about 14 mpg. I even have a heavily modified Supercrew King Ranch 4x2. I have a supercharger that puts me around 350 HP, custom tune, and high flow fuel system, all with 24" wheels. What's more, I have to use 93 octane, which is about $2.60 a gallon across the state line in PA (which I drive because it is about 15 cents cheaper than up the road.

Figuring you spend 135 a month at an average of 2.35 a gallon I figure you are doing about 690 miles a month.

690 miles a month at 12mpg would cost you annually $1620 for fuel

If you got a 50 MPG hybrid tin can you'd spend $390 a year in fuel.

Saving yourself $1200 a year in fuel. Now add in the cost of the car paid in cash of say 24000 and you break even in 19.5 years. So in 2026 you will actually begin saving that $1200 a year. Assuming you don't hit a squirel and total the thing.

(if my math checks out anyhow)

LOL.... yeah I got ya! ... I'm keeping the SC. I didn't realize how expensive new trucks were now (never considered a hybrid... maybe later?). I've been doing pretty good at keeping my RPMs down. Can't wait to see the improvement! Next on my list will be a "good looking" well-priced flush-mount or roll-type low riding cover (hard to find IMO... ).

Thanks for your insight

That seems to be a big debate with these trucks. I guess I could pull out my bed extender and run a tank of gas? Looks kinda funny though with nothing in the back :o

Try installing an aftermarket air intake kit and muffler system. This should help your performance and give a slight increase in mileage. Be carefull though, it is tempting to step on it more when you have the increase in power. It also sounds great! I have also heard that the superchip can also help. Most of all try and not punch it too much this will dramatically reduce your gas mileage. You basically have to real easy on the pedal when possible.

Thanks Arc...

Any suggestions on which one? Maybe one I can install myself? I popped in a K&N filter about a year ago. Saw an increase in performance but not mileage... must've been my heavy foot again! Replaced it with a regular Purolator.

I avoided this dilemma by not trading in. The new truck only works on weekends, which is really the only time the family and I get to go out together. Weekends are also pretty much the only chance I have to pick up things like lumber or other items that need a truck. My old ride, a '90 Trooper, is still going strong at 160k and delivering about 24 mpg everyday to work. And when it finally dies, I'll switch to the '92 Dodge Shadow sitting in the drive with 115k...

Sure, it would be nice to drive the truck all the time, but wearing out such a fabulous machine just going to work doesn't make sense to me. Even if I didn't already have the other two vehicles (plus my wife's car), I'd find a way to save the miles and gas. If all goes well, I'll get to see this '05 odometer at 35,000 in 2015!
