Lugnuts for Lightning Rims?
Lugnuts for Lightning Rims?
Picked up a set of 99 Chrome Lightning Rims from a buddy of mine who upgraded to 20's on his L but the lugs wouldn't fit. Any idea what size I need? I want to order a set of Gorilla Locking Lug Nuts but have no idea what size to get. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm going to say they are not the same. I've got a 2001 SuperCrew and bought a set of 2000 Lightning wheels. You can use the stock lug nuts but it is not recommended. The correct lugnuts for the Lightnings have "flat" bottoms with a built-in washer and the stock lugs are beveled. Just might to double check with the parts dept at your local dealership and ask to see both kinds. Then you 'll see the difference. Mine are 14mm. And the only company that made a locking lugnut was Ford. Had to get them from the dealer. Close to $45.00 if memory serves me right.

Anyone have any idea if I need this part? I knew I saw it before will looking for parts for my Mustang and it took me a couple of days to "stumble" over it again.

There was a mid M.Y. lug nut size change.
Prior to 29-NOV-99 they were 12 mm, after this they were 14 MM.
The lug nuts for the L and for the stock are both the same base. McGaurd shows the non-L as an Acorn type, but it is not. Same flat washer base as the L.
Take a look for a set of lug nuts from a Ford Racing dealer like www.oemfordparts.com in TX.
The ones for yoru 2002 are : M-1012-E, qty 5 per pack, so you would need to order a qty of 4 of M-1012-E, they are $ 10.80 per pack of 5.
With the M-1010-L stops, yes you will need these, else you will tear up the side lip of the rim on both front wheels ( maybe pitch a wheel weight as well, or at least move it ). These are 18.00 for the set.
They are a bit of a PITA to remove the stock ones, I used an angle grinder to remove the head on the old one, and beat it out of the A-Frame with a drift. They are stuck in there good, so expect to spend some time on each side. I think I was like 45 min each side doing in on jack stands. Lift it might have been easier to do. Worth the small cost of the steering stops and the 1.5 hours to install them.
Both the chrome lugs and the steering stops can be had at the URL above, or at any Ford Racing autorized dealer ( not all are I found out ).
Good luck.

Have you checked to make sure the wheels will even go on your truck?? A thread like this is going on in the L forum and they are saying that the holes on the 99 wheels are too small for the 14mm lugs that are on the newer trucks. I know your concern is the lugnuts themselves, but the wheels might not even fit. I know when I bought my replica wheels, they had a different lug pattern than the 99's.
If they do work out, yes, you need to put on the bump stops. They are only about a 1/4" longer (if that), but they do keep you from gouging the inner lip of the wheel or knocking off wheel weights. I posted a detailed thread on here when I installed mine to instruct everyone how to install them - essentially it took me 1.5 hours to do one side and 30 minutes to do the other, once I figured out how to do it.

Haven't tried the wheels on the SuperCrew yet (I've been out of town but flying back home tomorrow evening!) but I'm still looking for locks. Calls to a couple of Discount Tires dealers back home have left me a little frustrated. I'm told that Gorilla doesn't make a locking lug set for these wheels and they refered me to the dealership
Any idea if Ford sells a kit similar to these for the Lightning wheels? I found these on OEM Ford Parts.com.
M-1012-K Wheel Nut/ Lock Kit $36.00
(16) 1/2"- 20 thread chrome cone seat lug nuts (4) chrome locking lugs (4) chrome valve stems pull through style Uses 13/16" lug wrench (not included) Fits most wheels same as Lug Nut Kit M-1012-A
Just trying to get some things out of the way while I'm out of town and unable to do any work on the car or truck

Well I put the wheels on yesterday and they fit on perfectly. I used my stock lug nuts and they also fit just fine (they have a washer on the end to). I haven't put on the Lightning Wheel Stops yet either but I don't seem to have any kind of clearance problems and I turned the wheels from stop to stop and it seems fine.
Overall I'm pretty happy. The wheels look great, I just wish I hadn't spent the money on the Wheel Stops if I didn't need them. Found a place that sells Gorilla Locks but they didn't have any for the Lightning wheels in stock and Gorilla is back ordered right now. Next mod is the Hotchkis 2"/4" drop.
