Resonating sound from Rear End
I have a new 2003 SuperCrew with just over 7000 miles. At certain speeds it produces a really irritating resonating sound from the rear end. Usually around 50 MPH. If I let off the accelerator the sound goes away. If I just slightly press on the accelerator, it comes back again. I can make it come and go by applying power and letting off.
If I accelerate past 55 or 60 mph it goes away. I also hear it at 70 mph occassionally.
I don't believe it is tire noise, because I can affect it with the accelerator.
Has anybody experienced this? Any ideas?

I've had the same problem. It's a high pitch whine under a load.
Mine comes on @ 60-63, goes away & comes back around 78.
Ford put in a new drive shaft. It seemed to help for awhile. Now
it seems to be coming back again. Next repair will be in rear end
ring & pinion. Good luck!!

I too have an '03 4x4 Supercrew with 6,700 miles and it started to make noise from the rear of the truck recently. I've read a lot of the message boards on whining rear ends and the stories all sound similar to mine. Supposedly, there is a flaw with the housing that causes problems with noises. In any case, I am going to have to take the truck to the dealer. By the way, my other truck is a '96 4X4 Dodge with 119,000 miles on it and I've only replaced the water pump and other normal maintenance items.
Its you ring and pinion. At 9k I had ever component in the rear axle replace while they fixed the ring& pinion problem. It was a just incase measure that I was glad the dealer did. all warr. work and it took 3 full days.

Did the dealer give you any problems about the repairs? Did they know there was a TSB on this subject? How does your pickup sound now? Sorry so many questions, but I would like to have as much research material as possible on this subject. Thanks for the replies.
I dont know of any TSB for the problem. The service writer didnt much like it when I mentioned I know of other f-150 with rear end problems from internet sites. He gave me the "I dont put too much stock into what people say on the internet" So dont mention F-150 online :-) Just tell them to FIX IT!!!

It's slightly better but I still hear a howl. Guess its back to the dealer for me. So they replaced the whole rear axle huh?

Well, I took the Screw in for the noisy rear end, and a new axle has been ordered for replacement (it should take about 10 working days to arrive.) I was told that there could be many things associated with the howling in the rear end, however the dealership stated that it was better to just replace the entire rear axle. I was expecting to hear that the sound was normal and this and that, but to my surprise they were very understanding and the pickup should be fixed within the next two weeks.
here is the TSB, but i can't find where it says to replace the entire axle...
