Expedition Roof Rack

Has anyone put a shortened Expedition roof rack on a SCcrew? I was looking at my buddy's Ex, and it looks like I could bolt the rack in the same place on the SCrew roof. It goes just outside of the roof support ridges that go all the way from front to back.

Provided the main roof supports are in the same area (Which is still in question...) it should be enough support to mount a roof rack, no?

I'm trying to find a way to get a roof rack up there without dropping $500 for the Yakima system. I figure the Expy roof rack ought to be plentiful in the bone yards.

If you are still interested, i saw a white screw at lunch the other day with a roof rack that appeared to be off an expedition. looked to have been been mounted into the channles same as on an expedition. not sure what the load max is on the stock rack or what you are planning on putting on it.

offer the junkyard $20, if it doesn't work no great loss.

SCrew Roof Rack

I actually went to the boneyard and picked up some roof tracks off an old minivan .. any one will do.. just make sure they are in good condition.

I then went to my local 'specialty fasteners' store and picked up some galvanized short molly's ...

went home and lined up the tracks on the roof where I wanted them, marked and drilled the holes. Siliconed the tracks and molly's where I wanted them .. and tightened it all up.

Now I have a roof rack that I love .. haul bikes, snowboards .. maybe even a raft this summer (we'll see if the wife lets me) ..

It cost me about $5 at the junkyard. And about $50 for the Thule attachments.

email if you have any questions on the thule product numbers.

Dave

Thule stuff

Hey Mike!

Thanks for the compliments! I really appreciate it...

Let's see .. where to begin--

I took the roof tracks off of a mid-late 80's minivan .. any tracks will work (I actually tried 3 or 4 different vehicles before I could get a 'nice' set completely off). I did have to cut them down a bit .. but I made sure I kept the ends for aestetics.

I then just lined everything up and marked my holes where I thought it would look good and then drilled through the sheet metal (I didn't worry about trying to hit any of the roof braces ... I talked to a few different roof rack shops and they told me the span I was going would brace it just fine.)

Now .. when I drilled I made sure to be VERY careful to not poke through with a lot of force bacause of the headliner... you don't HAVE to take it out .. but you do definitely need to be careful or you'll go through!

On the screws and nut assembly I used ... I went to a local 'fasteners' store and told them what I was doing and they made a couple of recommendations (I'm going to look to see if I have any left over to take a pic) .. but it was basically a sheet metal molly bolt configuration. (when you take the screws out of the rack from the junkyard .. try to get one of the 'nuts' .. either take it to a ford dealership or a fastner store / hardware store with you and see if they can match it up.

The 'feet' I used were the Thule 430 - Tracker II Foot Pack and then you have to decide which load bars you want to use. Some people like the load bars to stick out a little bit .. but I personally went for a little 'shorter' bar (I actually cut about 4 inches off of the 50" Load Bar). $95 for the feet and about $25 for the load bars ..then what ever carriers you want to use from there. (I use the 599xt's for my bikes and the 724 flat top 4pair ski carriers for skis/snowboards... I plan to buy a carrier to hookup a raft later in the year).

I'm going to do a little searching for those screws and I'll take some close up pics for ya on the racks by this weekend.

fyi... look on ebay for the feet and loadbars!

Closer views

Alrighty then .. I was able to get a few more pics of the Thule racks with the bike racks on the truck.

I hope these help!

As far as the screws/bolts to attach .. I couldn't find any extras.

but a simple collapsable 1/4'' molly bolt will work .. just make sure you get some that won't rust out on you!

Enjoy!

Thanks a bunch for the info, it looks just like what I was thinking. Now to get an afternoon off with nice weather to go junkyard hopping...

This a great idea for my '02 screw. I actually installed a factory rack on a SUV that I owned a long time ago and used this item to attatch it to the car. It works great. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=30769

All done, I went ahead and got one off of an Expedition and shortened it. That way, until I get the safari rack fabricated I'll at least have the "wings" to make it look cool.

Check it out...

Hillbilly,

The rack looks really good. Could you give some details on how you shortened the rack and also how you fastened it to the roof.

Thanks

I took the rack and shortened it by 20 inches from the back. A buddy of mine has a band saw that doubles as a chop saw, so to keep the cut clean and straight. Nothing saying you couldn't use a jig saw or sawzall. It's attached to the roof by 1/4 - 20 nutserts, and 3/4 inch 1/4 - 20 stainless steel buttonhead screws. You drill a hole, place the nutsert in it, and crimp it down. Basically it's a cross between a rivet and a nut. You rivet it to the roof, and it's threaded to accept the screw. I ended up drilling twelve holes total, dabbed a little silicone for good measure, and tightened it up.
