growl @ 58-68mph
ford....
Its typical of Ford to deny anything is in the works to cure something. I talked to my field engineer today, he says maybe 2 more weeks before something is finalized for the SCREWS.
My rear end specialist installed 3 differentials in 3 Aviators today. They all had the same noise as the unit that was defective. I'm thinking Ford is about to have a serious problem on their hands.
I'll post more as it becomes avail!

JJ, do you know if the whine is causing damage in the mean time? I really want to drive the truck but I don't want to destroy anything. Plus I'm heading out of town this weekend and don't know if I should take the truck?

I have about 12,500 miles on my truck currently. Its still running fine but I wonder if it is causing hidden damage????

Here ye Here ye!!
Well the service message hit today, take your truck to the dealers, tell them you have a whine/growl between 40-60 mph(if yours is higher use my figures) Insist the tech run oasis to see the service message. As far as what the service message says is for the tech to check backlash in 6 different places, if all checks out replace the driveshaft with an updated one, left the part # at work, I ordered 2 shafts today, one for my truck, one for my dads. Talked to my tech who already checked my backlash, he says if its just a "tip in whine" you hear, then everything "should" be fine. Tip in meaning you will only hear it when you have the throttle pressed and it does away on decel. My shaft will be here tommorow and will be put in on Fri at some point, I have a 40 mile drive on the way home to test it out so I will post the result sometime on Fri night.
When you take your truck into the dealer they should be able to pull your diff cover off and inspect the fluid, if no metal shavings, then probably no hidden damage. If this however does not fix my truck I will be talking to my field engineer about the next course of action.

Thanks for the update Capt JJ. I will be eagerly awaiting your results on Friday night!
I really hope this does work. I mean I just had my truck in the dealer less then two weeks ago and they told me it was normal! I told them BS but now Im afraid they will screw up (no pun intended here) my truck.
Do you think I could take it to another dealership and have them look at it?
Let me know.
Thanks,
Jag

oasis
Oasis is where the tech enters the VIN in the comp and a symptom code, it returns with recalls, build dates, service messages,TSB's that are possible on the vehicle.
Where do you live?
We did find a page in the workshop manual that said" some rear axle noise is normal" this was after putting a whole carrier in an Aviator, that was noisier than the 1st one, my tech wanted to make a copy and give to the customer
You might want to try another dealer though.

fixed
Well my tech checked my backlash and pinion depth, then installed the updated driveshaft, looked the same to us with a different part #. Sat in 15 miles of traffic then finally got up to speed, the noise is basically gone! I hear a slight, slight slight while at 80 mph , but it is not very audible at all and would not be worth it to me to go into the rearend for this noise. My tech will be shocked on Monday when I tell him the results. My dads truck is going in Mon or Tues, his is very loud, hope it fixes his too!
bad news
My truck is a 2wd, actual TSB/SSM # not out yet. But on the way to work this morning at 80mph the whine has gotten louder, it is fine up until that point. I'ev put a call into my field engineer and will find out what the next step is on Monday......
