Question A/C stuck on?

It was 90 here in the ATL today. I used the a/c a little and then flipped it over to panel/floor (fresh air). I'm pretty sure the A/C was stuck on because even after 5 mins it was still really cold and it shouldn't have been.

Any suggestions on what to try before I take it to a dealer?

Thanks,
WebbDogg

WAIT! Before you take it to the dealer!

To my understanding, the A/C is "ON" in five of the eight possible modes:

1. MAX A/C
2. A/C
3. PANEL & FLOOR
4. DEF
5. FLR & DEF

Moreover, the A/C is "OFF" in only three of the eight possible modes:

1. PANEL
2. FLOOR
3. OFF

..."PANEL" and "FLOOR" modes blow fresh air (unless you live in southern California )

...so, to answer your question, your A/C was not stuck, it was meant to be "ON" when you had it set in the "PANEL & FLOOR" position. Hope this help you out.

So does Panel/Floor cool the truck faster than A/C or Max A/C bacause it is coming from more vents?

There is another post on this, the AC is on in several modes, as a matter of fact it's on in all modes excep toff and panel (only).

I tested this myself.

The only mode that will recirculate the air in the cab is MAX A/C all other modes will pull in fresh air from the outside and normally this will be less economical as the outside air is normally hotter than the inside or why would you use the A/C.

tried it myself today. From now on if I want fresh air it will be on Panel and if I want A/C it will be on Max A/C.

It still doesn't make sense to me why you would get A/C in modes that don't say A/C but at least now I know.

Thanks for the help guys.

Perhaps some trucks differ from another. Today, when I set the switch to "FLOOR" all I got out of it was outside fresh air (no A/C). How about the rest of you?

WebbDogg And Possible year to year differences

I have a 2003 SCrew.

The control buttons are:
Max Air, Vent, PNL/FLR, Floor, FLR/DEF, DEF

All use air conditioning except Vent and Floor.

It is good to have air conditioning on the defroster cuz it dries out the air substantially which speeds up the removal of fog off the windows. I wish I could have it for Floor also. It would be nice for people in the rear on hot days.

I think there is a dis-advantage of using Max Air when you don't need it because it can cause condensation and mildew in the system if you run it excessively. Use it when it is really hot and you need to take advantage of cooling already cooled (recirculated) air. I think it is best to use automatic most of the time. I use other settings too . . . like when automatic has too much air comming out the panel vents and it dries out my wifes contacts, then I use Panel/Floor.

There are a number of threads on using Max Air too much:

"Vent" on my 2003 sounds like what some are calling "Panel" in above posts. Maybe the name was changed from previous year models? Vent just brings outside air in through the front panel. Vent is a more intuitive name for it.

I recently had 4 passengers on a hot day and tried to get cold air to the back by using a cold temperature and "Floor" to take advantage of the rear floor vents. Nope, doesn't work, all it does is push fresh air (which was hot) or heated air (if you want, like in the winter) through those floor vents under the front seats.

Hope this helps.
