I don't think that you can just replace the glass, but I'm not positive. Maybe someone else can answer that one.

I do know that you can get an aftermarket power (I'm assuming that yours is power??) mirror that matches the factory one for about $70.

Go to the Muth web site : http://www.muthco.com/

Look up the year and type of truck you have, as if you are buying the mirror set, and download the pdf with the directions for mirror removal and installation ( or how to get to the 3 nuts behind the sail ).

The glass does just pull out ( put signal mirrors in my 01 ).

If you don't want signal mirrors, you might be able to order the glass from a online parts place like :
www.fordpartsonline.com
www.oemfordparts.com
www.fordpartsnetwork.com

That is all there is to it, the Ford glass might not be cheap, but it should be cheaper then the sginal mirrors if you don't want them ( good add on, if you don't already have them ).

Good luck

Steve

shelbydog25,

I drove to lunch Friday with a co-worker who drives an 02 SCab. He noticed that my passenger side mirror shakes going down the freeway. I never noticed it before, but I only glance at the mirrors.

I would think the mirror has to be replaced. I just wonder if this is covered under warranty, I'm at 33,000. It works fine, just shakes a bit.

Oh, now you have hit a sore spot! I am on my 4th replacement driver side mirror since I bought my truck 6 months ago!. I bought the truck used, pointed out that the driver side mirror vibrated so badly that the view was blurred and that I wanted it replaced. That was one of the stipulations before buying the truck. It was replaced,,no problem. Within a month, the once solid replacement mirror was doing the same thing. Replaced again.

Soon, that mirror was vibrating also. This time, the service manager talked to me. He didn't seem to want to relace it again. He produced a TSB from Ford saying that bug deflectors mounted on the front of the hood caused wind turbulence which caused the mirror to vibrate. I informed him that if the glass of the mirror were not loose in it's mount, it would not vibrate no matter how much turbulence was being applied to it, and I was not going to remove my bug deflector because of this, and that the replacement was not vibrating at first, but later began to do so. Since it was once not loose, but now is loose, it was defective. If it was only the wind turbulence, it would have done it all along. He capitulated and ordered a third mirror. This mirror was found to be broken in shipping, only after it was actually mounted on my truck. The black plastic triangle that is just forward of the window glass had the very top tip broken in shipping. The broken piece was found in the box. It was installed anyway until yet another mirror assembly could be ordered. THIS mirror was rock solid at any speed. The view was clear as day, no blurring. The 4th mirror came in, was installed, and, of course, it is now vibrating. I am so done with this issue. I am going to live with it I guess. The only mirror I have had that was solid for any length of time had a piece broken off during it's shipping.

Oh yeah, the mirror is a one piece assembly. The black plastic triangle forward of the window glass, the mirror housing, mechanical parts, and glass. The only part that is not included is the forward-facing part of the housing that is either chrome or color-keyed to the truck. It is transferred from the old mirror to the new when it is replaced.

I had a vibrating bed under the ceiling mirror in my apartment at college.......

Oh, sorry, wrong story.
The mirror on my old 97 vibrated. I notice the three screws holding the mirror plate down were working loose. I brought it back to the dealer and he said they can't tighten the screws, but they would order a new mirror free of charge. The new mirror never vibrated again. Stayed on there till I sold it 5 years later, bugshield and all.

I too have a bug deflector. I don't buy into that story either.. I'm still under warranty and it sure is irritating since I tow... Maybe I can "jam" something behind the mirror since it doesn't seem to help by replacing it....... By the way, what was the fix for the TSB? Remove the bug deflector? Ain't gonna happen here

shelbydog25....
I'm really not sure what the fix was. I think that there was not one, except to remove the bug shield. Kinda of like saying, if you choose to have a bug shield, you are going to have a vibrating side mirror. Sounds like a cheesy way to get out of a design problem if you ask me. When he told me about it, i promptly dismissed it as the cause and tactfully informed him that he was going to order another new mirror. We never got as far as discussing the fix directly.

I, too have thought about jamming something between the mirror glass and the housing, but I always tilt the mirror downward so I can see the lines better when I back into the parking space at work, so that is not an option. Besides, when it concerns something that costs as much as my truck, I would prefer to fix the problem, not remedy the symptom of the problem. I tend to be a little bit **** when it comes to my truck.

I just have a hard time believing that the change in the wind would make that much of a difference. Were not talking about 100 mph. And I would have to agree for what they charge for a truck today it is insane to say the only fix is to remove a bug shield. What happened to Quality is Job 1??
