Need help determining gear ratios
Just got a brand new 02 SCrew. It is a 4x2 with 4.6(since I never towed with my old truck). There is nowhere on the window sticker(MSRP sheet) that said what gear it came with nor can I tell from the axle tags. Any idea how I can find out what gear its got? And with 400 miles, SUPERCHIP, Airaid intake, Magnaflow exhaust, (will never tow anything),would I benefit with 3.73 gears? Please help. Thanks.
I used to have an 01 Supercab with 5.4 3.55LS before I switched so I am kinda spoiled and missed my 5.4 rocket. Don't get me wrong, it feels like I can already outrun a stock SCrew with 5.4 so I am just looking for a bit of security. Gas mileage is not as important.
By the way, I switched the stock 255/70/16 wheels and tires with a Lariat version 275/60/17 which I might add as having the same diameter (30 inches) so I do not think this is a factor. I just like the looks of the chrome wheels

I'd be willing to bet
that you have 3.55's and yes, you would benefit with 3.73's... I wish I had them but I didn't know the 03's were getting them standard on the FX4 pkg until a month after I bought mine (bought on Aug 31st)... I believe most of the 4.6's came with 3.55's.. Question is, are 3.73's worth the expense to you?
As for the ratio itself, look at the door frame and you will see an "AXLE CODE" - take that number and post back up... I don't remember off the top of my head but I'm pretty sure DAVEMAN will know it. I think he is awash in those codes he knows them so well - I nominate him for being the code guru! LOL
Later and post back up!

I belive that in 2002 the 4.6 started to get 3.73 gears, it may only be true with the larger tires but I though I remember reading that all the 2002+ with the 4.6 engines would start to get the 3.73 gears due to the suckeness of the 3.55 gears even with the 5.4
An upgrade that I am seriously considering is a 4.10 gear swap, my problem is that I have a 4x4 and it will cost over $1500 to get new gears and have them put in!

Okay, I'll play.
In 2001 and 2002, all Super Crews were equipped with 3.55:1 gears no matter what drive or engine. The standard axle has a code of X19 and the limited slip axle has a code of XH9. The 3.73s started to be an option in 2003 Super Crews and only with 17" tires and only with 4x4, axle code for standard is X26 and for the limited slip is XB6. For other chassis like the regular cab and the Super Cab, there are differences from what I've posted.
Also, you mentioned that your window sticker has no mention of the axle code, it must be on the sheet somewhere...
Hope that helps you somehow.
BTW, there's roughly a 5% increase in torque gained from installing 3.73s over 3.55s and roughly a 15% increase of torque going from 3.55s to 4.10s.

Well, I looked on the door sticker and it says I9 which I guess mean I have a 3.55 non-limited slip. I've done the FIPK, Magnaflow cat-back(Supertruck style), Superchip and I think I can run with a stock 5.4 SCrew now. However, the reason I am asking about the gears because I want to switch to 3.73. If my math is right, that's about 14.5 more torque which is pretty good. But what is the average cost of swapping to 3.73 and is it worth it? chould I go with pulleys instead? Thanks.

List of axle codes
USed the search function on the term axle code and got this thread as one of the search results.
This lists all the combo and the codes for them.
BTW I had a choice when I ordered my 01 SCrew in late JAN 01, 3.55 or 3.37 were the options.
