well if i remember correctly the crate engine is about 26,000 so it would be very easy to build a very high hp engine for less

 

Details?!?!? What is this deal your getting? There are some nice engine builds on this site that started as stock engines. Unless your getting the engine for 10000$ or less, I think it would be cheaper to build what you have. maybe?

This takes all of the guessing out of it...what pistons, compression, cams, etc. I heard this engine is good for 1,000 hp. Just put a big enough blower on it and spin it fast!

 

No, you do not remember correctly. A GT500 crate motor is $16k and I'm not paying anywhere near that.

Here's what I wanting to do: Pull my existing 5.4L 3v with the whipple and replace it with a GT500 5.4L 4v with a Whipple 3.4 or maybe turbo.

I remember Rafa had over $30K in his motor build up and was looking at 650-700rwhp. Even if I bought the crate engine directly from FRPP for their price AND added the aftermarket S/C, I would still be in for far less than $30K AND have more HP potential. Tell me where my thinking is flawed.

 

It might be easier to just use the GT 500 shortblock and put your heads on it than to try and get the complete motor to work in the truck. The gt 500 motor is only 500 hp at the crank and that can easily be done with a 3v and a supercharger. At least with the 500 internals you can push the boost up to 15.

 

I only remember rafa getting 550 and the trans would not hold it. Even at 550, he had to have 700+ at the crank, don't forget rafa had a 4x4, he was losing 150+ thru the trans and x-fer case.

It would be cheaper to just get forged internals, a trans upgrade and converter, and fuel system upgrades. Then you can crank up your whipple to 15 lbs. You can probably do all that for less than 10K

I agree with your statement about the crank hp, but remember, for less than $1k, you can add more than 100 hp to that GT500 motor. A few thousand more and I can have 500 more horses. My truck is already over 500hp at the crank and it's going to take much more $$$ to get any more. In other words, I would have to build it up and have a whole lot of custom parts fabricated.

 

I can buy the GT500 motor, pull my motor, install the new one, and work out the wiring for LESS than $10K.

 

The 3v 5.4 will make a ton of power, as long as your internals will take it. Our biggest stumbling block is the trans in stock form with the stock converter, as rafa found out. I'm just guessing here, but I would think 500-525 at the wheels is about the limit for the stock trans. I don't know how much the built 4r75 will hold, rafa never came back to tell us.
