JL Audio 10" W3
I have a Qlogic box and im looking for a 10" W3 to put in it. I seen the subs priced around $150 on ebay. I know a friend of a friend who will sell me his used 10" W3 for $70. The problem is its 7 yrs old. He is an older man that really only used it to jam country music. Would I be dissapointed if I go with the used sub? Should I just buy new? O ya pushing sub with a JL 250/1 amp.

Personally, I don't like old JL subs, but I love older Rockfords. It honestly depends on how you feel about older stuff. If anything, really search for another 10" subwoofer. You can find ones for similar pricing that are better in terms of sound quality, volume, and/or power handling.

IME, the older JL subs sound better than the newer stuff (based on my session with the older W6, not the w3). I would ask him to put it in the box and demo it personally before you buy, buy I see no reason to pay $200+ for a new Korean built W3 when you can get a better sounding old school JL for $70...

I bought some of the cheaper MTX Thunder 6000 back in 2000, and ran them in three different boxes in two different trucks... went through about 4 amps over the years... They were downfiring in a sealed enclosure... Texas Summers....
Sounded as good when I sold the truck with them in it in 2009 as they did when I bought them...
You'll not find a better deal than the $70... see if he'll let you run it in the box to confirm it works... Make sure you don't starve it of power... and it will likely last you a quite while, or at least long enough that you can save up for a different sub...

Well, 2ohms is half the current resistance as 4ohms, meaning you can get double the power depending on the amp. Since it is an older JL 250/1, it will run 250 watts RMS into either 2ohms or 4ohms, according to the JL site. With most other monochannel subwoofer amps, you would want a 2ohm subwoofer. However, with yours, 2ohms or 4ohms is okay.

A couple of things werent covered in this thread.
1. What model 10w3 is it? The current one you are seeing on ebay or wherever is the v3. Either way, they are still nice, but beeing that you said it is about 7 years old, it cold be a v1. I had a pair of v2's and they are nice. Being 7 years old as well, I would either guess that it is a v1 or v2. You can tell by looking at the dust cap. I believe the v1's had a bubbled dust cap, while the v2's have a flat one that just ties right into the cone. I may have not explained that well, but if you need any more help, just shoot me a pm.
2. Mounting depth. I would definately double check the mounting depth situation. The current w3's are a tad too deep for the underseat box's in our trucks. A few people on here have modded their boxes to accept them. I am pretty sure that the v1 and v2 w3's have a vented pole piece, meaning that you should leave about a half inch behind the magnet before you reach the box.
If you can post a pic or get a look at the magnet, it will let you know which version it is.
I hope this helped some,
