Hi everyone, new to this board!
Just got an 97 F-150 Extra Cab with a 4.6 and I love it so far.
I want to start changing the sound equipment and I don't know much about the factory setup, maybe you guys can help me out.
I have the factory Tape/CD controller. Does it have RCA in the back? Also who makes the unit for Ford, is it Clarion?
I want to change all the factory speakers with some decent ones, but I don't want to spend a fortune. What do you guys recommend? I listen mostly to Hard-Rock/Metal so I don't need pumping bass. What size are the factory speakers, front and rear?
Thanks for your help!

--Peace

Stock is 6x8" but 5x7"s will fit with a little gap on the sides.
As stated above get some componets they don't have to be expensive.
Also check out the www.Sounddomain.com message board.
Good info but F150online will always be home to me.

See the Pioneer TA6813/TA6815 speaker thread, I think there may be something about them in there, but IMHO the fact that the tweeters are behind the factory grille is a problem.

POLK AUDIO

I have a very nice home stereo system using Kenwood components, and Polk Audio RTA-15T front speakers, rears are Polk Audio too.

POLK AUDIO

When I looked for home speakers I listened to everything I could find...NONE were better than Polk Audio!

Superbly crisp, tight and clear!

POLK AUDIO

I have to believe that their high end automotive products are as good as their terrific home components.

POLK AUDIO

I don't think you can go wrong with Polk Audio, they provide the most accurate sound reproduction in my experience.

Spydog, I have the Pioneer 6813's in my '99 Supercab in all 4 corners and I think they sound crisp and clear. They were easy to put in and were a direct fit for $79.00 a pair. They are 6x8 2 way speakers. For the price and sound I have no complaints.

darylvt,
thanx for the info..after countless hours of soaking up info,( my head was spinning after getting into the world of car audio) i finally bought some speakers saturday.i put some mb quart dkc113 5.25 coax speakers w/titanium tweeter disc in the front door and pioneer 6813's in the rear doors.i got the mb quarts for $105 and the pioneers for $60. i think i got these speakers a little cheaper than normal, but i did some major haggling to get these prices from a local shop.the sound is a major improvement, but no doubt it could be better ,but for the money i spent i am happy..i just kept thinking about what LUVTHEC has said in a couple post, "go with what sounds good to you" and in my opinion my system sounds good.now for those that money is not an object, go with the boston acoustic pro series 6.5..i heard those in a 2000 f150 s/c at the shop and was extremely impressed.the ba's will go on the wish list..

Spydog, No problem. Sounds like a nice system you got there. Like you said, what counts is how you like the way it sounds. I have had Boston Acoustics in the past and was also pleased with them and I am impressed with the 6813's in my own truck with no complaints. Well good luck with system.

The best deal on the very best speaker for at least the front of your truck is on sale at Crutchfield right now!! I just pulled the new cat. out of my mailbox and they have the Infinity kappa series 5 x 7 component system on sale reg. (for the last 2 yrs) $299.95 for $179.95 plus a 15% discount making it $152.96 includes crossovers! You mount the tweeters on the flat area on the door pannels at ends of dash and it will blow your mind. Go to your local Hi-Fi store and ask them about Infinity Kappa series. They are so Hi-end that most including Car Toys don't even stock them. I challange anyone on the planet to come up with a better speaker for your F150 or any 5x7 install. Even if you have speakers, unless they are Polk or Boston buy these for the price. Ask someone that knows speakers. Oh and they want alot of power so feed them well.

Pretty accurate statement. Infinty Kappas are very nice speakers. Great price to boot! I used mine for about six months and I am currently in the process of re-wiring and installing Boston Acoustic Pro 6.5, 2 Way Components. Staying with Kappas in the rear.

Side note: DO NOT install your crossovers in the door panels. When I removed them there were signs of moisture inside of them!! I used two sided tape and mounted them to the sheet metal inside the door..... Bad move on my part.

Question

So Robert, is the only way to get the 15%
Crutchfield discount if you have the printed catalog? How about us poor saps who would just order over their Web site? Should we be so bold as to ask for the discount?
Thnx,
B.E. John
