The reviews beg to differ? Show me a more popular advertising company in these magazines other than maybe Alpine,Sony,etc.. You think politics do not come into to play when a review is written? If you truly think that, then my friend you are in for a big surprise. Everything and everyone can be bought.
My thoughts on the JL comps .. utterly lifeless and severely lacking true dynamics. They couldnt carry a note if it was handed to them.
What are they sub par to? Please see references above. If YOU like them, so be it. But do not by any means sell yourself short and rely on tunnel vision of what the publications show you. There is a world of better performing products at similar and even lower pricing available. You like many others have unfortunately been caught up in the marketing hype of products. I applaud these companies for doing such a great job, but honestly feel for the consumer ( or victim) in most cases.
These speakers sound great and are not power hungry so they are even a nice upgrade using the factory headunit.
Here's some pics of a customers truck that he sent me.

For a solution to your situation ...
What have you heard already?
What were your likes and dislikes?
What amplification will you be using?
Looking to be active or passive?
What is your overall budget for this project?
For what it's worth and again my opinion (although a commonly shared one) I would not invest too much (preferably none) to the rears. It will draw your stage back and just not sit right with the overall result. Ask yourself this: The last time you were at a concert, how many musicians were behind you? A good solid stage will provide adequate levels for all listeners.
On the rears I will usually do a simple set of coaxials and then if amped I'll sit in the driver's seat and have them gained up just enough to where my ears kind of hear them then backed off just a bit. That way they aren't really for me but for the rear seat passengers so I don't get the "I can't hear my speakers" when the radio is at lower volumes. If I had just a two seater car or didn't care for my rear passengers to hear then there wouldn't be any rear speakers
God I used to hate installing systems into peoples cars where they wanted a amp on the 6x9s in the rear deck but nothing on the fronts. All you hear is the blasting behind you. Always love seeing the 6x9 boxes sitting on the rear shelf of a car.

6speed.. i dont really have a budget on this..
i plan keeping the stock reciever and using a JLAUDIO CLEANSWEAP for the highs .
i will be adding the Salleen editon integrated sub..
hmm. what speakers have i heard... well obvioulsy i like JL audio, i like Memphis audio.. my bro has 5x7's in his 150.. they sound decent.... i actually thought the stocks sounded better.. they way better lows.... its hard to get an after market speaker to have the low end of factory speakers.... eclipse sound pretty good..... this is why i cant decide.. because in the f150 these speakers sound totally differecnt than in other vehicles.. (ok i want aftermarket but i dont want it to sound noticebaly aftermarket,, if you understand what i mean by that...)

But even if theyre barely audible, they will still draw your stage back. A solid, well laid out stage will always provide adequate enough for rear passengers, if they dont feel so then they can take a cab.
Although in a cab they dont have much of an option either.

Active = electronic variable crossover and no network (little boxes) inline with the drivers. Lets just say you are going passive.
