Senior Member I have been in the car audio buisness for 12 years. Like I said they are much cleaner subs. Of course you will get louder bass out of w3's w7's but not as clean. Also you will pay 3 times as much money for louder dirty bass. Also the w1's only require 150RMS per sub where the w'3 or 7's require 500RMS. Also most people, by the sounds including yourself, do not build there boxes to the exact amount of airspace, which is the whole thing. With every box I build I contact JL to make the box to adjust to the kind of music the customer listens to. The shape of the box also plays a major role. Also the W/1's have a mounting depth of 4.3 inches where the W7 is about 8. 10 times better subs for the money. I will put my subs up against any other 10 out there especially if the box was built from wood by an amature.
I am actually going to get bry's back on this one. Look at most major audio world competitions, you will not see to many JL W1's in the mix. JL is more of a Best Buy kind of sub, yea its good, but not half as good as alot of other. The reason everyone believes it is so good is because it is a mass marketed brand name. As far as inside JL audio I have personally heard a JL W7 and a JL W1 and your absolutely crazy if you think the W1 will out thump a W7. So my friend... I do not believe you know a whole lot about car audio. If you did, you would not have to contact JL everytime you had to build a box for a customer... you would think after 12 years you might have figured that sort of thing out.

You got me...I have no clue. I have no idea what I was thinking.

I would love to hear your set-up. Are you in SoCal by chance?

I dont know if I should laugh or cry at this...

Just to throw a little fuel on the fire though...if the W1 is so much better than the w6's or w7's, then why would JL even bother to make the 'higher' models?
But since they STILL DO, and the w1 owns all the other JL products, then why dont they rename the w6's and w7's to like w1/2's, w3/8ths or something like that. Or maybe call the w1 the w8

(all you other guys I know that was stupid but I just want to see what he has to say about this )

You need to read

If you read my post, you are correct the W6's and 7's are louder. But in an application like a truck you would not get the proper air space for those subs unless you do major modifications to the truck, therefore the W1 will sound better in a truck with limited space. And ofcourse I have to contact JL for building my boxes because customers want diffrent applications in diffrent cars. I very rarely build the same box. Not to mention for the price W1's are also a better choice, the price diffrence doesnt equal the amount of upgrade. If you want to hack and modify your truck into a sound machine only, I could definetly build a box that would sound better with the higher end subs. Most customers do not want to loose any space of modify there cars.

I had an original series set of 12W6 in my 93 GT they were VERY clean subs. I had them in a 2 cu. ft. box (1 per sub). I would have went larger with the box if I had more room to work with. It was a good all around system and it still was able to manage 144.7 dB with not a ton of power ( maybe 275rms ea.). I have heard ALOT of subs over the last 13+ years I have been into car audio and still would take JL's over most anything else.

Most of the newer subs do not go LOW. They have went more towards pure output and have a high fs killing the low end. I would not get a W7 since they are more of an SPL sub. I like Image Dynamic subs, they are one of the few that still offer a sub with some low end and not just a ton of 45hz output. I also like the older OZ Audio subs, another good sounding subwoofer. I have been forced to by NOS old-school subs after not liking the sound of the newer subs that are out.

Are you kidding me?

I'm about as big of a JL fan as they get, however the W1 is a JOKE. Should have never existed.

Don't you just love how people ease their way on to a forum, lol.

For what it is worth, The ED 11Kv2 is one of the best value subs there is. I just bought a pair myself for $144 shipped. That comes with the factory 3 year warranty. Ebay price on the W1 with no warranty is around $200 shipped. I will venture to wager that if you put the subs in a blind test in the proper enclosure, you will hear no audible difference. A/B test them and I bet you can not tell which is which. You like your W1, that's great. But, do not knock another sub just because you like yours. The JL W1 is not better than any 10" sub out. It might be a good value sub but, the ED is a good sub that is a better value.
