Component tweeter install- drill into metal panel?
I'm getting ready to install a set of Polk MOMO component speakers in the front of a '01 Screw. I've seen many people flush mount tweeters just in front of the door handle in the "soft" area of vinyl.
For those that have done this, did you have to drill into the metal of the door to get deep enough clearance for flush mounting? There's some sort of connector mounted on the door right behind where this soft vinyl area of the door panel is. Did you have to move that connector?
Thanks for any input-

They won't hit metal in the door panel. But, the problem is, ripping the vinyl when drilling your mounting hole...
If you use a hole saw the exact size of your tweeter hole, you risk tearing the vinyl and the flush mount tweeter cup edges might not cover rips and tears caused by drilling. The vinyl pad is plastic melted to the back of the panel, if you pull the door panel you'll see that theres about 3/8" or so of plastic to drill through. You'll have to pull the panel and see if your mounting spot is clear of any wires, the panel dosen't have wires on it, but they do run along the top, bottom, and sides of the door. I set mine in the plastic panel itself. Your going to have to place a pice of wood over the vinyl before you drill to minimize tearing of the vinyl.

Well I think I can get by without going into the metal behind the vinyl area if I reroute the connector and cable mounted on the metal panel. I'm going to precut the soft vinyl with an exacto knife, and then use a hole saw to finish the job.
I'd like to keep the tweets up higher than Rockafella has them if I can- I think it sounds better (to me). I don't think I could flush mount the MOMO tweeters in the sail panel without going into the metal behind the door panel. The MOMO tweets require a 1-3/16" depth to flushmount.

The switch is the adjustable pedals, first avalible in the Harley, I think. Anyway, I wanted my tweets in the sail panels up high myself, but the drivers side sail panel is smaller and mounting it would be more trouble than is worth, so because I have kick panels and those tweeters aim straight at my ears, mounting the other set low wasn't a big deal, still have a great sound stage.
Well I got them in without drilling into the metal door panel. It was a tight fit and I had to re-route the connector and cable just behind the soft vinyl area. The cable used to come up over the top of the stock speaker hole, I rerouted it down around the bottom of the speaker hole and drilled in some cable holders to keep it in place.
I traced out my hole on the vinyl and precut the soft stuff with a razor knife. Then used a normal hole saw to make the hole through the panel. No rips or tears. Looks great.

For the MOMO tweets, I don't think I could've done the sail panel mount without hogging out the metal for clearance. For the flushmounts with the MOMO's they are fairly deep. I'll see if I can get some pics later today....
