Post Got my speakerbox built for extended cab...

Well, it finally got finished today. The box is fabulous, I'm going to do my best to get pics and plans for other people who want simular. The box is going to raise the rear bench by 3" but that's OK for me. The quick dimension on the box are 7" high, 12" deep & 53" wide. The sides and rear of the box are all 12" high, leaving a nice opening under the front for air movement. The subs fire down into the floor. The back side along the bottom has 3 notch's out of it 1 for the transmission and 2 places where it looks like they bent the floor board up for structural purposes.

I plan on bending some sheets of aluminum to form the side brackets for the rear bench. I'm exluding the center mount because the seat will sit right on the box for more support under the center. The only thing I haven't figured out yet is how to mount the 2 rear brackets, being that they are what the seat belts are connected to. I have a funny feeling that I am going to have to weld in some extra steel to extend the length of it to reach the floor mounts.

If anyone has any ideas, feel free to let me know... but either way, the box is built and the back seat is going back in, one way or another.

Tell me about it, and the worst part is when we metered the system, I was expecting about 137db, but the best I could do was 132.9. I didn't have the best CD for it either though. I'm going to be replacing my 3 10w0's with 4 10w3's in the near future and that should get me well over 140db. I'm also going to replace my Zapco AG350 amp with a Zapco Studio 1000.

I'm not a member of sounddomain yet... I'm going to wait until I get my seat put back in before I submit my info... I may wait until I get the w3's in though. I haven't decided yet.

As for the bass, it goes as deep as you want it... more than 5 minutes or so and you'll have a headache, watering eyes and ringing ears. It's great for giving back massages, and it also rattles windows... I have my crossover set at 60hz for the subs...

You don't have to finish your system before you sign up for the message boards.

I understand that, but I think there are too many people on there who talk about their systems, but don't have pics or anything showing it. I just want to do it all at once. Get the pics and info up and not have to go back and change stuff later.

Actually 3db is equal to double amp power.
10db is apparent volume double to most ppl.

140db will be easy with 4 10's. A guy here at work has 4 10's in his car and it hits at 142.1. That's 4 10" JL10w0's powered by a Zapco AG650 powering it. I'm planning on 4 JL 10w3's, which are capable of hitting a lot harder because the power handling is more than double. Either way, I foresee 144db with the 10w3's. The meter used for my truck was the same meter used about 2 weeks ago for a regional IASCA competition, so I'm going to guess that the meter is accurate...

On the side... 4 18's and 2 15's and all you got was 145? must be a pretty inefficient box design. The car doing 154 only has 5 18's with 1000 watts per sub...

On the other side, we measured at the shop and I could fit 24 12" subs in the box of my truck... If I did it there's no way I'd hit under 160db. But even with sponsorship it's about a $25,000 project...

Oh... and as for the 'have I ever heard 140db... no. I have heard much louder. Friend of mine Jeff holds the world SPL record at 184db, another car in the shop when my box was being built hits 154db.

I've got a little side project on the go that will hit 150db I hope. I'm putting 2 JL 18w6's into the front of an old VW beetle I have at home... It's going to be a nice little competition car when it's done...

140 dB with 4 10's? A bit optimistic don't you think? I would think a high 135 at the best. Have you ever heard 140 dB? I have. You aren't going to get there with 4 10's. You realize that every 1 dB increase in sound is equal to an approximate doubling in the actual volume? I have built several systems that will do better than 140, one going to 145.6 at IASCA Nationals in 1991. That one had 4 18's and 2 15's, with almost 3000 watts of total power. I would be willing to bet that if you actually measured the SPL level with a calibrated, A-weighted (or is it C-weighted, it's been a while, I don't remember), you would be surprised. Another thing to remember is that SPL needs to be measured with a sanctioned CD, not a tone or spike generator. I don't know if they are still using it, but track 1 off of the Flashdance soundtrack is (was) the standard. Just something to think about.
