Well i went and talked to a few shops today. One only sells probox stuff and wont build any boxes, one wants $200 for a sealed box, and another (the same ine who installed my components and amp) wants $95 for a custom prted box. It just so happened that he had just put a ported box in a single cab chevy and it was a slot port and it was really high quality work. I think because of the price im going to go ahead and get the ported. Do you guys agree? Is ther any reason i should not go with a ported?

Thanks,
X

Make sure he isn't trying to sell you an off the shelf box and claim it is custom for your vehicle just because it happens to fit.

You need to make sure the enclosure is proper for YOUR sub. Ported boxes are VERY touchy on the relationship between the sub, internal volume, and port tuning.

You NEVER buy a prefab ported or bandpass enclosure unless you know its exact internal volume(s) and port size(s).

Yeah, with that sub I would make sure he's making a box that meets the specs recommended by JL. If you get there and he already has one built I would be skeptical. Go over it with a fine tooth comb and make sure the internal dimensions look right. As far as ported you should be fine if you have the space for it, I personally like the sound of ported better in most applications. Make sure the port is the right size is all, it makes a big difference. The port for my 15 is 4" diameter and 14" long for example. I had a setup with a 2" diameter port and it sounded wierd (air rushing in and out). Somebody else here could probably tell you exactly why the port matters, I don't know the technical side of it. Good luck.

Ok thanks for the info. Im sorry to keep this topic dragging on but I went with a freind to audio shops in ft. worth so he could look for some stuff. We went to a place that sold JL, and as soon as we walked in he was kinda beina d*** with ears. My freind said somthin to him about that i was gettin a W7 12 and he seemes to sull up even more. He asked what amp i was going to use and i tilod him the fosgate power 1001bd, and he told me that id be lucky if the sub lasted a month on that amp. It seemd like he was trashin everything he didnt sell tho. Any truth in this? I know fosgate isnt as good as they used to be but is it that bad now? At cartoys one of the guys who worked in there was talki to me and he has 2 13W7 to go in his beamer. He was showin me charts on how u go about tuning ported boxes and everything else so he seemed pretty smart about his stuff. He thought it would be ok. Also i realized i dont think my amp has a subsonic filter on it. I read that u need one for ported boxes. How do i go about getting one?

Thanks,
X

Hey, are you close to Ft Worth? I'm in Arlington. If you want to hear what a w7 sounds like in the truck you are more than welcome to come give it a listen. Your amp should be just fine. It looks like it Rms's(sp) 500x1 at 4ohm and 1000x1 at 2 so you should be getting about 700 watts which is plenty. If you haven't found a box yet you might try AutoSound in Arlington. They built my last 3 custom enclosure, 2 in my old Miata and the one in the truck, and they have all sounded excellent.

It was autosound that i wentto on S. Cooper. I know they have one on Green Oaks to. If i was gonna go back to an autosound store it sure as hell wont be the one on S. Cooper. Like I said i soon as we walked in he was bein a jerk. So i wont go back to that store. I live in cleburne, bout 30 miles south of ft. worth. Im up around that area alot so maybe sometime when i go up there i can give it a listen. It kinda sucks my subs gonna be here on thursday and im leavin for San Diego that morning so i wont even get to see it till i get back!!! It sucks but at least it will be here when i get back. . Also what about the subsonic filter? Ive heard that it is neccesary for ported boxes. True? If so what do i do to get one?

Thanks,
X

Well never mind about the subsonic filter. I went to Rf's site and read some better specs and it says it does have one.

thanks,
