Do downfire boxes work well.

My truck is regular cab and i want a sub. I was figuring making a downfire box, because it is pretty much straight cuts and it doesn't take up huge amounts of space.
I haven't really decided on speakers yet. I know the kicker solobarics are pretty good, but I see the cdt's and they are priced alittle bit better. Would it be a big difference if i got two cdt tens or one Solobaric 10. What if you wired one solobaric ten up with a 2 ohm load. Would that sound pretty good and hit hard. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I would not recommend building a down-firing box for a reg cab. You will loose too much leg room...and not all subs are designed for down-firing enclosures.

Do you already have an amp?

What are you looking for (SPL or SQ)?

in my 02 supercab i have 2 12's under my rear bench firing down. sounds like crap! once i flip the seats up and face em toward the rear of the truck i get a much better response. so this summer i am going to build a new box that will fire the subs toward the front of the truck. hopefully i can make a nice clean looking setup.

good luck.

I guess downfire idea just went out the door. What is spl and sq. Never heard of it. I haven't decided on an amp yet, but i am kinda want a punch amp. I have never built a speaker box, but i have all the stuff to do it with. My dad owns a machine shop. What is the best way to build a box for my truck.

SPL = Sound Pressure Level
SQ = Sound Quality
SQL = a mixture of both

When designing a system you have to start with the end in mind (i.e. subs), then you choose an amp to power the subs.

Rockford amps are very popular name brand and are over rated! You can get a better quality amp for the same amount of money, if not less.

If you would like some sub & amp suggestions let me know.

I don't know your budget...but it doesn't matter. Elemental Designs has an awesome SQL sub with a nice price. Check out the K series at www.edesignaudio.com. The subs are designed for small enclosures...great for trucks! I just bought two e12kd4's

hey 2trucks1wife:
you think the ed10kd4 would sound good in a sealed box, that has .55 CF of airspace and is a down-firing application?

I'm not a big fan of down-firing boxes...but people with ex-cabs really don't have much choice if they want to keep the rear seat. The sub will perform very nice in a box with .55 cf of airspace. Just make sure you have at least 1/2 inch of space behind the sub.

Definately gonna buy from them. I like the look to. Should i get the 2 ohm sub or the 4 ohm ones. Are there amps as good as there speakers. Thanks for all your help 2Trucks1wife.

Well the mounting depth of the sub is 5.4 and the box mounting depth is also 5.4 so i dont know if ill get that 1/2inch of space behind the sub.
What if i try this, I take a piece of MDF about 3/4 thick, make the cutout for the sub on it and mount it to the original box. Then take the sub and throw it in the box, that way ill gain the extra 3/4 of space needed. And then i should def. have the 3/4 of space. Do you follow me? You think that would work, or see any problems arise from that?

If you are going to get one sub get the dual 2 ohm, so you can present a 1 ohm load to a monoblock amp. If your getting two subs get the dual 4 ohm, so you can present a 1 ohm load. I can't say anything about their amps, because they are brand new...they are selling them on pre-order, I don't think they will start delivering until March.

Yes, adding a spacer to the outside of the box will give you more mounting depth. Your idea above will not work, because when you cut the hole for the sub the "wood disk" that comes out will have the same diameter as the hole.

so how should i go about making the spacer for the sub and box?

All you have to do is cut out a ring...make your inner diameter the same as the sub hole and the outer diameter 1" larger. It will look like a donut.
