Sirius and stock unit questions

I have an 06 xlt, with what i think is the basic stock unit. Can i install Sirius sat? What do i need? Can stock antenna be used? If i get an aftermaket HU do i still need to buy anything else? Is only one subscription needed for the ones you can bring in the house too? Thanks in advance for the help.

Here is the setup I had installed in my 04. The Sirius unit can be removed and brought into my house and used. I had to install a PIE adapter to use the AUX function on my stereo.

Here is a picture of the PIE adapter.

You can use an FM transmitter to play Sirius through your radio but the quality is not as good as a wired.

Do a search and you will find more info. Here is a quick search I did.

If you get a plug and play kit it comes with everything you need to hook it up to your truck.
Also, with a plug and play reciever you can buy a little boombox from Sirius that you reciever plugs into and listen to it at home too.
Like Khindel said, you can set up the reciever to broadcast to your stock radio antenna, but its not as clear as wiring it to send the signal directly to your radio.

Yeah the FCC has put stricter limitations on FM modulators as to not intrude on other people's radio. Older units were great with just the fm mod. but u can't hardly hear the sat. station now w/o a direct feed or aftermarket fm mod...

You may just need to pick up the factory parts from Ford. Then it'll be installed on your factory radio and you wont have a stand alone unit.

I found some never activated brand new Ford units (with the receiver box and antenna) on Ebay that were about $125. The catch is that you still have to buy a cable that isn't cheap.

Thanks guys for all the good info. I'm still debating on which route to take. I like the factory set-up idea, because of the clean look. I also like the plug and play because i could listen to it inside my house too. I'm still researching my options, will let you posted.

Even on my '99 it was pretty staticy with the signal sent to my truck's FM tuner. I still have an AM/FM/casette radio in my '99, so I just went to Radio Shack and bought an adaptor that sends the Sirius signal to my radio through the tape deck and now its crystal clear.
In the future I will probably go with something better than what I have now. Id really like to have something thats completely al in-dash setup without the plug and play unit and the exposed wires, but Im only keeping my truck another 2 years at the most and then trading it in on something newer (probably an '06-'08), so I didnt want to invest a ton of money in putting sat radio in this truck.

I mounted my PnP in the compartment under the cig. lighter. Very clean with only the 1/8 connector on top of the dash exposed.

I've been very impressed w/the PnP unit. Was concerned about moving it from truck, home, work, but no probs with that. Had one issue that was prob my fault & Sirius quickly took care of it. They sent me a complete new unit & asked that I return the broken part & whatever I didn't use. Oh was I tempted, but they were so good about it (& credited my account) I sent it all back & the non functional antenna.

I had the free Sirius subscription in my 06 S'Crew for the first 6 months but I like the features on my plug n play better so when the free time ran out, I installed the PNP unit. The best part of the whole deal is that I don't have to use that crappy magnet antenna. There is enough cable in the dash to get the hardwired antenna to my PNP unit. I originally had the Sportster Replay in there and the wireless was not too bad. I had to replace it though with the Sportster 4 and immediately knew I would have to use the FM direct adapter. The static is gone! I am however looking at getting an Alpine unit for Christmas because I want my PNP directly wired and my iPod directly wired too. I'll post pictures on this thread this weekend so you can see the install I did. Anyway, I guess my point is, the plug and play units have some great features and the ability to just have one subscription for home and vehicle is GREAT.
