Cool

Macgyver, I have found out via the U-Haul website that their trailers only have a weight compacity of 3200 lbs. which puts that way under the trucks weight. So we will have to find another way to get the "Drag Queen" to where we need to get it. Yeah, when I have the bricks in the back, I made sure that they guy at Home Depot put them right over the rear axle and I had a good 1/2" of space between the rubber stops and the axle. I have been in this situation a couple of times with full loads of wood. Then I drove about 110 km/hr (65-70 mph) for about an hour and a half. Truck handled well, never downshifted once, even with a couple of hills. I was really impressed with the preformance of the truck.

I am brand spanking new to trucking and towing, fact the only thing I have ever towed was a plastic dump truck behind my tricycle when I three.

I need to tow my 90 Honda (around 3000 lbs) and later I want to tow 60s and 70s firebirds, GTOs and LeMans, dunno how much they weigh.

My bud at work is selling his 93 F-150 with a 302 4-speed auto, orig tranny, but engine replaced last year with a 97 with 40K miles on it. the body has 190K miles on it. It has a Class III hitch WELDED to the frame. It is an ext cab with short bed, 4x2.

I am thinking of renting those 2 wheel car tow dolly from U-haul to tow my 90 honda.

q1. will 93 f150 with a 302 be the sufficient for my needs?
q2. should I install an electric tow brake system?
q3. could someone pls explain why/how the brake on the dolly/trailer would not work cuz of the hitch?
q4. the truck has 2 gas tanks, can I switch between tanks, is there a switch somewhere? the rear tank has a hole in it about half way up. the fuel pump (how many are there) was making a loud whining noise!!!

TIA,

the truck for your needs would be perfect . the tow dolly has surge brakes . they work when you slow down the tow vehicle it applies pessure on the hitch allowing braking on the towed vehicle , the honda would tow fine . the others or any rear wheel drive vehicle i would suggest pulling the driveline if you are going to tow it on a tow dolly . (if it is an automatic trans )

should be a switch on the dash for the tanks . mine is a 90' model and maybe different then yours but mines on the dash to the left of the column next to wipers switch .

Although I am not a hitch expert like Macgyver, the answer are in line with what I would have said. On the '93, the tank selector switch is on the left hand side of the steering wheel on the dash. I wouldn't think it would be too hard to fix the hole in the gas tank either. The 302's are pretty strong engines and if it was just rebuilt than you are ahead of the game.

so I can keep using the front tank only, right? I won't need to fix it soon. I read a few posts and the front tank is around 18 G, yikes, I have to tow my honda from KC to lincoln, NE, 200 miles

what kinda mileage should I expect when towing the honda and without it on the way back? is it really expensive to have the electric brake kit installed?

the front pass side needs new tire, balljoints, and front needs an alignment. how often do ya adjust the front alignment?

how often should I change oil, filters, spark plugs, rad collant, etc?

thanks again,

if you are towing cars on a tow dolly you DON'T need electric brakes .
yes you can use only the front tank . even with a load you should get close to 200 miles out of the 18 G tank . (my SWB is only 16.5)
have the front end work done . or do it yourself if you can , then take it to a shop and have them align it . they will tell you how long you can expect out of an alignment .
oil ,oil filter . every 3000 to 5000 miles . i personally change every 3500 miles
radiator should be flushed and T stat changed every year . add new anti freeze . ( spring in hotter climates . help keep it cooler in the heat being freshly changed . fall in colder climates to help keep it from freezing in the winter .)
spark plugs . whens the last time you changed them . if you cant remember , change them ....lol

thanks for the advise, the deal kinda fell through, the truck needed 900$ worth of work (windshield, rear gas tank, pass sd ball joint, alignment and front tires). the seller would not budge from $2600 and i would not budge from $2k.

also I was kinda about the orig auto tranny on the truck, at 180K miles.

how long does these auto trannies last till they need to be replaced/rebuilt?

looked at prices of some old truck on ebay, ouch, looks like I may end up getting an E150 or E250 to do my towing, LOL.....
