C6

well, as some of you know, im planning some major engine mods pretty soon (either ading heads/cam/intake to my 302 or swapping a 351), and from what i've heard, my 5 speed will not like all that torque. so, before i break my tranny, im thinking selling it and swapping in a C6 with a B&M megashifter. what's involved in this swap? where can i get my hands on one of these tranny's? i tried the local junk yards, but no luck. also, i know this is a pretty big job, is it worth it? how much $$$ (rough estimate) am i going to need to do this swap? thanks!

You may want to consider a C-4. the mustang guys use them all the time. They can be built bulletproof and they are pretty easy to find. They also are physically smaller and weigh less than a c-6. I know they are fairly easy to rebuild, and somepeople even do it themselves. I'm not sure whats involved in the swap, but I don't think it would be too difficult.

from what ive heard, i thought the C6 was much stronger? im probably going to go for the swap, so my "future" modified 351 will be making some serious torque, which one can handle the power better, C4 or C6? do i have any other choice of tranny that can handle a lot of torque? C4/C6's are 3 speed tranny's correct? is this a bad choice tranny for a daily driven truck? i know the 351 is really gonna hurt mi gas mileage, will the c4/c6 make it worse? thanks!

I would have to say the C-6 is definately the transmission with more b*lls. Between c-4 and c-6 for your application, the c-6 is the way to go. But be ready for some seriously crappy gas mileage. If you're going with an automatic tranny and are concerned about gas mileage, maybe you should consider an AOD?

A C-4 can be built to handle plenty of horsepower. I know of one guy running 10s with his c-4 mustang using a $50 fram rebuild kit. A properly built c-4 will have no problem handling a 351 with heads/cam/intake. A c-6 is stronger than a c-4, but they are also heavier, larger, and slightly more expensive to build.

im not really worried about gas mileage because i wil hopefully have another car soon to drive around and this will be my "project". im just curious as to how bad the mileage would be. thanks for the replys.

so is it fair to say that with 33's, a mildly modded 351, and a c6 that i will get around 9 or 10 mpg? another thing, is the last ratio on the C6 a 1 to 1 ratio (since i know its not an overdrive tranny). thanks!

Yes, the C-6 3rd gear ratio is 1:1.

the only thing that worries me about the C6 is the fact that the C6/351/3.73/33" tires combo is really gonna give me some crappy mileage! how about a ford AOD, how much power can those hold up? im still leaning towards the C6, but i want to check all my options...thanks!

you should go with the c6, forget the e4od tranny. it's ok but it can't handle the abuse a c6 can.

i tell ya . i got the aod trans . of course it is 12 years old but it has started to give me problems and i know in the not so distant future i am going to have to get it fixed . not something i look forward to since by all indications it is going to cost me any where from $1000 to $1200 maybe more to get it rebuilt . i never knew any C6 to cost that much . well not a reg ol rebuild . i dont know bout this AOD but i do know a C6 can handle whatever ya throw at it if it is built right .
