Check engine Light
Check engine Light
I'm new here so bear with me. I have a 1996 F150 XLT 5.0L with 182k miles. My cruise control quit working and the OFF overdrive light started blinking. I replaced both speed sensors on the rear and trans. Cheap and easy. It worked for one or two short trips. I just checked the deactivator switch (aka brake release switch) is closed i.e. zero ohms. When I start the truck the switch opens up several hundred Ohms after I press the brake pedal. I have not noticed any problems driving down the road or shifting, just no cruise control and the blinking OFF light. Open to suggestions before I take it to Transmission Technology.
FIRST thing you need to do is get the OBD2 codes read out. The blinking OD OFF light means there is a transmission fault of some sort, and a code reader that can read Ford transmission codes will give them to you.
I assume you have a 4R70W, not a E4OD?
There was a recall on the cruise control, regarding the deactivation switch on the master cylinder. What they did was insert a fused harness, the fuse could be blown. Replace the switch and harness with a straight harness, see Amazon link below:
Also check the vehicle fuse for the cruise control and the 3rd brake light.

don, welcome to the forum. I moved your thread to the pre-97 section because you should get better advice here than in introductions.
That last thought from glc, could be the cause of the cruise control failure. If the 3rd brake lite is out, it disables the CC.
