Coast up to every single stop sign and light from way back. Try to time it so that you barely have to brake, if at all. That works absolute wonders, though I never am able to make myself do it consistently. And keep the RPM below about 2k on take offs. But yeah, essentially drive like a blind, arthritic 95 year old.

When coming to the crest of a hill punch that SOB put in nuetral and see how far you can coast :P Your driving habits is all you can really do like deacon and KMAC said. Hard to get better mpg's out of a 351!

Hotter thermostat
Install a vacuum gauge and use it to control your throttle foot

Reprogramming will help too if you drive it easy afterwards. Keep the tires pumped up to maximum pressure. The Michelin energy tires or similar will help too. Wide tires hurt mpg.

I gotta have a 4x4 . Is there any engine stuff that would help keep it better. I just don't feel it's doing as good as it should.

I would do a tune up if it hasn't been done in awhile. Worn out plugs won't do you any favors.

Check the code. Autozone or Advance will do it for free. It's most likely an egr code.
Midas checked a cat for me one time. They did it by cutting a hole in the exhaust pipe ahead of the cat and checking the pressure before the cat. In my case it was something else.
Buy some Gumout fuel injector cleaner for high mileage engines and put it in the gas. It works! It will clean up your injectors and combustion chambers. Walmart sells it.

Not all parts stores can check EEC codes. The only one here who can is one of the O'Reilly's. If it were OBD2, everyone can check those.

With that said, a 351 in a truck gets crappy mileage no matter what you do.

That's the thing. They can't check my engine light cause it goes off when I cut the vehicle off.
