Was this a good transmission back in the day
100 bucks is one heck of a deal, especially if it is less than 120k miles and works good. There was a guy around here asking 700 for one with 120k on it.
If it was 4x4 I'd be all over it.

The Mazdog tranny always was, is now and always will be a useless piece of junk. It is the reason that manual trannied F150s are only rated to tow 2000 lbs. The reverse ratio is so ridiculously high that you can back up at over 30 MPH but you cannot back a trailer at 2 MPH without abusing the clutch. Add to that its propensity for blowing the seal plugs out of the shift tower and peeing its load of ATF all over the highway or the extreme fragility of its shift forks and you have a worthless pile of scrap metal looking for a dumpster.
If you can get rid of one without having to pay to get it hauled away, you're money ahead. Getting someone to actually pay you for one approaches highway robbery.

Sorry you feel that way. I have seen and done some amazing things with an m5od-r2. I can agree to the shifter forks being "fragile" but it was my fault they blew. I always rested my hand on the shifter while in fourth. As for the seal plugs blowing, it can be prevented by welding metal caps in their place. At least that's what the tranny shop did when they repaired my shifter forks. That trans, after the repair, did anything I wanted it to until I sold the truck with over 400k miles! BTW it was a 97 4.6 4x4. I also own, currently, a 00 4.2 4x2 with the "mazdog" w/ 160k with no problems minus a slave cylinder. With both trucks, I have pulled over 2k lbs countless times without fail. Just my .02
I like my M5OD-R2's, but due to them sometimes wanting to puke out I've gathered a few spares for my trans collection. I paid 70 for the last 4x2 unit I picked up.
700 is waaaay to high though. Would be a good deal for a ZF small block pattern however.

If it was a zf I would of bought it already. Guy had an inline and the 5 speed posted for 700 so I asked if he would separate them and he then said he wanted 7 for each.
I told him good luck. Motor and trans are still up for sale now.
